2 Canadian HR Reporter, a Thomson Reuters business 2018 Casino workers reach tentative agreement COQUITLAM, B.C. — After being on strike for more than six weeks, more than 400 employees working at Hard Rock Casino Vancouver in Coquitlam, B.C., reached a tentative agreement with their employer on June 25. "Through their hard work and unity, Hard Rock workers have a solid first agreement on the table," said Stephanie Smith, B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU) president. Employees at Hard Rock vot- ed to join BCGEU in May 2016 and have been trying to negoti- ate a first collective agreement with their employer since Janu- ary 2017. When they reached impasse earlier this year, 99.5 per cent of workers voted in favour of strike action, said the union. More than 400 workers at the casino walked off the job on May 11, 2018, after mediation broke down. Major issues included wages and hours of work, ac- cording to BCGEU. Both sides reached a deal in mediation over the weekend. Union members at the casino will vote on the tentative agree- ment later this week, said the union. Elopak strike over as workers agree to contract BOISBRIAND, Que. — The strike at Elopak in Boisbriand, Que., ended as United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW), Local 501 members voted 95 per cent in favour on June 28 of an agreement-in- principle following intense ne- gotiations. Under the new contract, the 230 unionized employees work- ing at Elopak will keep their existing work schedules. The employer has promised to stop hiring contract workers by 2020, which will lead to enhanced training programs, said the union. Both sides have 150 days to agree on the content of those programs, said UFCW. Other gains in the contract include a 12.8 per cent wage increase over the duration of the agreement, a 75 per cent in- crease to the night-shift bonus, monetary compensation for work-schedule errors, new paid holidays and an additional day of special leave, said the union. Workers at Elopak went on strike on May 29, 2018. Cascade Aerospace workers sign new deal ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — Uni- for, Local 114 members working at Cascade Aerospace in Ab- botsford, British Columbia, rati- fied a new three-year collective agreement on June 21. "Unifor members are pivotal to Canada's aerospace sector," said Jerry Dias, Unifor national president. "Our members make high-quality products that at- tract investment that drives job creation in communities large and small." Among other gains, the new contract includes a cost-of-liv- ing increase to wages, improved health-and-safety language, bet- ter scheduling and a boost to per diems, said the union. Workers went on strike in 2014 for 11 weeks, according to Unifor.
