2 Canadian HR Reporter, a Thomson Reuters business 2018 Prevost workers sign new deal SAINTE-CLAIRE, Que. — Unifor, Local 9114 members working at the Prevost plant (a division of Volvo Canada) in Sainte-Claire, Que., voted 73 per cent in favour of the tentative agreement presented by their bargaining committee at a spe- cial meeting held on July 22. "By creating positions re- served exclusively for employ- ees in early retirement and allowing employees aged 57 and over to make themselves available for temporary replace- ments, access to early retire- ment will be greatly improved for all employees," said Francois Gignac, Unifor national repre- sentative. The main non-monetary im- provements were made in early retirement. Older members had been calling for access to this type of benefit for years, but the bus-assembly line did not really lend itself to early retirement, said the union. For employees nearing retire- ment, the collective agreement also makes provision of an an- nual weekend-long workshop to help employees prepare for retirement, according to Unifor. Under the new deal, workers will also obtain a salary increase of 2.85 per cent retroactive to July 1, followed by an increase of 2.75 per cent in 2019, and 2.25 per cent in 2020, said the union. The three-year collective agreement will expire on June 30, 2020. Other provisions include au- tomatic personal-leave day, ad- justments to group-insurance plan as of the third year of the deal and an increase in the em- ployer contribution to the pen- sion plan, according to Unifor. Delta Airlines workers get agreement TORONTO, MONTREAL — The best pay rates in the in- dustry are among significant im- provements in a new collective agreement achieved on July 24 by United Steelworkers (USW) members working at Delta Air- lines operations in Canada. USW, Local 1976 members approved the new, five-year con- tract in ratification votes held across Canada this month. The contract covers more than 300 Delta employees, ac- cording to USW. "With the solidarity and support of our membership, the bargaining committee achieved meaningful con- tract improvements while also defending our members' defined-benefit pension plan and contracting-out language that maintains job security," said Steven Hadden, president of USW, Local 1976. The deal provides a 4.5 per cent wage increase in 2018, to be followed by increases of 3.5 per cent in 2019 and three per cent in each of the last three years of the contract, said the union. Workers ratify new contract with Canadian Kraft Paper THE PAS, Man. — Members of Unifor, Local 1403 on July 26 voted to ratify a new three-year collective agreement with the employer, Canadian Kraft Paper (CKP) in The Pas, Man. Local 1403 represents 200 workers at the mill. After three months of talks, the bargaining committee se- cured a contract that improves wages and working conditions as well as providing stability to the mill and town, said the union. Other changes include im- proved bereavement leave, a 10-per-cent training premium, improved paramedical benefits and increased safety-equipment allowance, according to Unifor.
