2 Canadian HR Reporter, a Thomson Reuters business 2018 Tentative agreement at Port Arthur Health Centre THUNDER BAY, Ont. — Uni- for, Local 229 reached a tentative agreement on Aug. 14 with doc- tors at the Port Arthur Health Centre (PAHC) in Thunder Bay, Ont., that if ratified, would end a 128-day strike. "This bargaining committee is unanimously recommend- ing that members accept this agreement which will see patient care return to normal as soon as possible," said Katha Fortier, assistant to the Unifor national president. A ratification vote will be held and the PAHC board will then have to approve the agreement that was reached after just one day back at the bargaining table, said the union. "We have repeatedly said that the employer just needed to sit down and bargain and I am so proud of these 65 incredible women for their resolve over the last four months," said Jerry Dias, Unifor national president. Montreal AJW Technique workers sign deal MONTREAL — About 150 members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), Local 2309 working at AJW Technique in Montreal over- whelmingly ratified a tentative agreement on Aug. 13 after eight months of negotiations. "The five-year contract will let our members breathe a little bit and come to work with some peace of mind," said Michel Richer, grand lodge representa- tive. "The employer was squarely against any improvements to the contract, and they made it quite obvious." On average, pay increase stood at 24 per cent, and in some cases — due to raising the floor — some employees received a 35-per-cent increase over five years, said the union. Other improvements include an increase to personal days, in- creases to vacation days and an improvement to flex-time (em- ployees can start work anywhere from 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and fin- ish the day relative to the start time), said IAM. Workers also won indirect improvement of their pension through the salary increase, as well as improvements on recalls, bereavement leave and subcon- tracting, said the union. AJW Technique began air- craft component maintenance, repair and overhaul operations in Montreal in 2013, after pur- chasing the former Aveos com- ponent shop, which was repre- sented by the IAM. Workers at Olymel ratify agreement THUNDER BAY, Ont. — More than 400 United Food and Com- mercial Workers (UFCW), Lo- cal 175 members at the Olymel bacon facility in Cornwall, Ont., ratified a new contract on Aug. 16. The new agreement includes gains for the food-processing employees, including paid sick days and seniority-based job postings, wage gains of $2.60 per hour for all employees, an increase of 90 cents per hour for forklift drivers hired prior to 2012 and increases for general labourers, said the union. As well, the deal includes an attendance bonus of $1.25 per hour for all employees who miss no more than four hours of scheduled work per month, $250 eye-care coverage every 24 months, enhanced dental cover- age and the addition of massage therapy to the health and welfare plan, said UFCW.
