Deal reached
between City
of Weyburn,
Sask., CUPE
WEYBURN, Sask. — The Ca-
nadian Union of Public Employ-
ees (CUPE), Local 90 ratified
a new collective agreement on
Oct. 19 with the City of Wey-
burn, Sask.
The union membership voted
90 per cent in favour of ratifica-
tion, according to CUPE.
"It is unfortunate that it took
until mediation for the employ-
er to realize that the union was
serious about not accepting the
employer's concessions," said
Sherri Blackburn, CUPE, Local
90 president.
The ratified agreement con-
tains no concessions and in-
cludes a wage increase of one per
cent, 1.5 per cent, 1.5 per cent
and 1.5 per cent over the four
years of the deal.
All employees currently em-
ployed will receive retro-pay
back to Jan. 1, 2017, said the
union.
Surrey, B.C.,
librarians vote
to join CUPE
RICHMOND HILL, Ont. —
Professional librarians at Surrey
Public Library have voted to be-
come Canadian Union of Public
Employees (CUPE) members
in a Labour Board vote held on
Oct. 17.
Issues important to profes-
sional librarians included or-
ganizational change that im-
pacts services to the public and
having a voice at work, said the
union.
The 48 professional librar-
ians will join 180 members who
work at the Surrey Public Li-
brary. They will be members of
CUPE 402-02, the libraries unit
of CUPE 402.
The union now represents
all public library workers in the
Lower Mainland, according to
CUPE.
"Public libraries are incredibly
valuable to all of our communi-
ties and it makes me proud to
stand up for this important pub-
lic service," said Jeannie Kilby,
CUPE 402 president.
Mackenzie
Health
workers sign
fi rst contract
RICHMOND HILL, Ont. —
Call-centre workers at Mack-
enzie Richmond Hill Hospital
ratified their first-ever collective
agreement on Oct. 18.
The workers are employed
by Sodexo and are the newest
of more than 1,200 Mackenzie
Health staff to join the Ontario
Public Service Employees Union
(OPSEU), including office and
clerical, service and diagnostic
imaging workers, according to
OPSEU.
Additional gains include float
days, improvements to vision
care and more vacation time,
said the union.
St. John's
Purity workers
ratify new deal
ST. JOHN'S — Newfoundland
and Labrador Association of
Public and Private Employees
(NAPE) members at Purity Fac-
tories in St. John's voted in fa-
vour of ratifying a new collective
agreement on Oct. 18.
The new agreement contains
increases in wages, as well as
contract language and benefit
improvements, according to Jer-
ry Earle, NAPE president.
The new deal is effective as of
June 27, 2018, and is set to expire
on June 26, 2020.
NAPE represents more than
40 workers at Purity.
