school workers
ratify new deal
SASKATOON — The Cana-
dian Union of Public Employees
(CUPE), Local 8443 ratified a
new collective agreement with
Saskatoon Public Schools on
March 28.
More than 450 members cast
ballots, and the result was a 67
per cent vote in favour of the
proposal, said the union.
"We are pleased we were able
to reach a deal that saw modest
wage increases for our mem-
bers," said Scott Barrett, CUPE
8443 president. "There were also
numerous minor improvements
to language, but one we are es-
pecially proud of: Casual and
temporary employees will now
accrue seniority."
The four-year deal means a
wage increase of zero per cent,
0.5 per cent, 1.5 per cent, two
per cent and includes other
monetary improvements such
as enhancements to vacation
increments, said the union.
Montagnais
Hotel workers
sign contract
QUEBEC — United Food and
Commercial Workers union
(UFCW) Canada, Local 501
members working at the Mon-
tagnais Hotel in Quebec City
achieved a new contract on
March 28 that provides wage in-
creases and better benefits.
The 25 hospitality employees
work as housekeepers at the ho-
tel. Under their new four-year
collective agreement, members
will receive wage increases av-
eraging 10 per cent in the first
year of the contract for staffers at
the top of the wage scale. Those
moving up the scale will contin-
ue receiving yearly increases of
two per cent, said UFCW.
Members will also enjoy new
dental benefits and a clean in-
spection bonus, the latter of
which will vary with experience,
said the union.
UFCW Canada Local 501 rep-
resents more than 19,000 mem-
bers working at 410 businesses
across Quebec and northern
New Brunswick.
B.C. municipal
workers ratify
agreement
POWELL RIVER, B.C. —
Workers at the qathet Regional
District in Powell River, B.C.,
represented by Canadian Union
of Public Employees (CUPE)
798, ratified a new five-year col-
lective agreement on March 28.
"Our members were seek-
ing important improvements to
make life more affordable and
recognize our increasingly com-
plex work. We are pleased that
this agreement achieves both of
those goals," said Graham Tonks,
CUPE 798 president.
The agreement was negoti-
ated over four days and features
a two per cent wage increase in
the first four years plus a 2.25 per
cent wage increase in the final
year, said the union.
Peel Cheshire
Homes
workers
join IAM
BRAMPTON, Ont. — Work-
ers at Peel Cheshire Homes in
Brampton, Ont., joined the In-
ternational Association of Ma-
chinists and Aerospace Workers
(IAM) union, District Lodge 78
and Local Lodge 1295 on March
25.
"These workers are all excited
and looking forward to the IAM
making some positive changes
to their workplace," said Rooti-
sha Rampat, IAM District Lodge
78 organizer.
