2 Canadian HR Reporter, a HAB Press business 2019 Acadia University workers ratify fi rst deal WOLFVILLE, N.S. — Sodexo physical plant workers at Acadia University ratified their first collective agreement on April 17 after just two days of bargaining. Unifor, Local 2107 members voted 91 per cent in favour of the contract that secured wages, shift premiums, paid education leave, a women's advocate and enhanced safety language, said the union. The vote on April 10 also in- cluded a vote for shop stewards and a chairperson, said Unifor. The collective agreement cov- ers workers who perform custo- dial and snow removal duties at the university, said the union. Winnipeg language pathologists join MGEU WINNIPEG — The Manitoba Government and General Em- ployees' Union (MGEU), Lo- cal 452 welcomed its newest members on April 18 — WRHA speech-language pathologists (SLPs) — who work at a num- ber of access centres throughout Winnipeg. "We ended up choosing the MGEU over other unions out there because, for one, they seemed the most responsive and ultimately followed up with us," said Cheryl Friesen, who's been working as an SLP in Manitoba for 30 years. Though entirely Manitoba- based, the MGEU is the largest union in the province, with more than 40,000 members, 17,000 of whom work within the health- care system. Local 452 members provide a range of speech-language pa- thology services to pre-school children with speech and lan- guage delays. They join more than 3,000 MGEU technical, professional, paramedical mem- bers and will have an opportuni- ty to vote in the upcoming Bill 29 union representation votes, said the union. Baffi nland Iron Mines employees ratify contract IQALUIT, Nunavut — What started as an organizing drive in May 2017 culminated in the ratification of a first collective agreement on April 17 with Baf- finland Iron Mine to represent production employees, which will be effective May 1. The International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 793 (IUOE) said it appreciated Baf- finland's decision to negotiate a fair and reasonable mutual gains partnership agreement. As of the date of the ratifica- tion vote, there were more than 800 workers. Pliteq workers in Vaughan, Ont., join UFCW VAUGHAN, Ont. — Manufac- turing employees at the Pliteq plant in Vaughan, Ont., are the newest members of United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW), Local 1006A after vot- ing on April 12 to join the union. Job security, vacations, im- proved benefits, and protection against discrimination and ha- rassment were key issues during the unionization drive, said the union. Pliteq is a designer and manu- facturer of recycled rubber.
