PM #40065782 Labour Reporter Canadian www.labour-reporter.com May 20, 2019 Nova Scotia nurse fired after breaching patient confidentiality AFTER A patient was restrained at a Dartmouth, N.S., hospital, leading to a defamation suit, a reg- istered nurse volunteered infor- mation to three different people, which caused the employer to fire her for violating patient confiden- tiality. The nurse, identified as "DH," had worked at the Nova Scotia Hospital for more than 20 years and was most recently employed for four years at Emerald Hall, a facility that treated patients with intellectual disabilities combined with a mental illness. Calgary cancer centre clerk terminated for communication breakdown AFTER AN interaction with an elderly cancer pa- tient and her daughter went poorly, an intake clerk was fired for "failing to communicate in a respect- ful manner with patients and failing to maintain a professional and calm demeanour in her verbal and non-verbal communications." Fatiha Kara began working at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in 2006 and was transferred to the radiation therapy department (RTD) in 2015 as a booking clerk. On Nov. 3, 2017, manager Cynthia Stulp was advised by two staff members about a negative pa- tient interaction earlier in the day. A 74-year-old patient and her daughter were told by Kara that an appointment time was changed. The patient said she would have trouble mak- ing the appointment because it was early in the morning. Kara told the women that they could attempt to get an appointment changed but they would have to make a phone call themselves.
