2 Canadian HR Reporter, a HAB Press business 2019 New deal at Metro Bayridge in Kingston, Ont. KINGSTON, Ont. — United Food and Commercial Work- ers union (UFCW) Canada, Lo- cal 175 members at the Metro Bayridge Road supermarket in Kingston, Ont. ratified a new collective agreement on Oct. 19. Some of the gains and im- provements include better scheduling language for full- time employees that provides them a regular day off during the week when feasible and evening shifts will be scheduled to 10 p.m., instead of 10:30 p.m., says the union. As well, the deal includes provisions that group two em- ployees can be scheduled three evening shifts per week, to a maximum of three weeks in a row. Every fourth week, group two may have a maximum of two evening shifts, says UFCW. Group two employees will also receive a two-day weekend once every five weeks; all employees working between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. will receive the night-shift premium; and full-time employ- ees are guaranteed an eight-hour shift when working a statutory holiday. There were also a number of monetary improvements, including higher end-rates for part-time employees in the agreement, says the union. The contract covers more than 70 employees at the store. Scarborough, Ont. hospital workers reach deal SCARBOROUGH, Ont. — Employees at the Scarborough Health Network in Scarbor- ough, Ont. signed a new collec- tive agreement on Oct. 25. An arbitration award, issued by arbitrator Chris Albertyn, settled the outstanding issues on Oct. 23, says OPSEU. "It's been a long struggle," says Kingsley Kwok, Ontario Pub- lic Service Employees Union (OPSEU), local president. "The award, while not containing everything that we asked for, is generally accepted by the nearly 900 members who are ready to move forward." It's the first agreement since the OPSEU, Local 575 bargain- ing unit was certified May 8, 2018, says the union. The employees work as labo- ratory technologists and techni- cians, and as health sciences pro- fessionals such as social workers, dietitians, physiotherapists, oc- cupational therapists and phar- macists, says OPSEU. Negotiations earlier this month did result in agreements on the vast majority of issues. However, no settlement could be reached on wages, benefits, mobility of employees between sites, hours of work and schedul- ing, says the union. The Scarborough Health Net- work consists of three hospitals and eight satellite sites. UWOFA librarians, archivists reach deal LONDON, Ont. — University of Western Ontario Faculty As- sociation (UWOFA) librarians and archivists and Western Uni- versity in London, Ont. reached a new agreement on Oct. 28. The agreement must be rati- fied by members on Nov. 4 and the university on Nov. 21, says the union. Provincially appointed con- ciliator Greg Long assisted in ne- gotiations, says UWOFA. Workers at Montreal Four Seasons join union MONTREAL — The United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW), Local 500, wel- comed new members who work at the Montreal Four Seasons Hotel and Residences on Oct. 15. More than 250 employees working at the hotel were recently certified as a UFCW, Local 500 bargaining unit by the Quebec Administrative Labour Tribunal, according to the union. Employees working at the new downtown hotel are confident of achieving a collective agreement that meet the needs of hospital- ity workers, says the UFCW.
