Employer too casual about N.W.T. employee's casual leave request A NORTHWEST Territories worker's request for casual leave to attend sessions of an outpatient alcohol abuse treatment program during the workday was unrea- sonably denied, an arbitrator has ruled. The collective agreement be- tween the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNT) and its union included an article al- lowing workers casual leave with pay of up to two hours in a day — and additional time if travel was required — for certain types of appointments or "other purposes Break from work leads to break in continuous employment A CANADA POST term worker claimed the corporation purposely failed to schedule her on a shift to maintain continuous employment status, but poor communication from the worker meant Canada Post thought she was on vacation. Leah Visser was hired by Canada Post Corpora- tion (CPC) in October 2015 to work in the White- court, Alta. post office. In April 2016, she became a term employee — appointed on an annual basis to cover for absences, holidays and heavy work- loads. Under the collective agreement, term employ- ees received "applicable benefits" under the Can- ada Labour Code if they had continuous, uninter- rupted employment of at least six months. The collective agreement also gave term employees with continuous employment a right of recall if another term assignment became available within 90 days of their last day of employment with CPC.
