The agreement ended the strike which began on Oct. 15, and employees returned to their workplaces on Nov. 1, says the union. The 46 members are staff at the Canadian Labour Congress and joined the IAM in March 2018. Manitoba municipal workers unionize GLADSTONE, Man. — Em- ployees of the Municipality of Westlake-Gladstone in Glad- stone, Man. agreed to join the Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU) on Oct. 30. "Like so many of our mem- bers, these folks provide vital services to their neighbours," says Michelle Gawronsky, MGEU president. "And that winter storm we had a few weeks ago highlights just how much Manitobans rely on such services when the going gets tough." The employees work throughout the municipality's public works and water utility departments, which include the recycling depot and waste dis- posal grounds, in roles ranging from administration to equip- ment operator, says the union. The next step for the new members is to elect a local exec- utive and bargain their first con- tract, says MGEU. GDI Sussex Centre workers sign contract MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — Jani- torial workers at the GDI Sus- sex Centre in Mississauga, Ont. achieved a new union contract on Oct. 31 that provides wage gains and improved benefits. To reach an agreement, the union negotiating committee requested the help of a concilia- tion officer, says the United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) Canada. Items in contention for the employees included wages and achieving health benefits for the first time in this agreement, says the union. As part of the new contract, wages will increase for all em- ployees by $0.25 per hour in the first and second years of the con- tract, followed by an increase of $0.23 per hour in year three, says UFCW. The employer will also con- tribute $0.87 per hour worked toward the employees' dental plan. In the third year of the agreement, members will qual- ify for health benefits, says the union. Bereavement language has been improved to include grand- children under the three-day provision. Employees are now entitled to four weeks' paid vaca- tion after 10 years of service with the company, says UFCW. In addition, employees benefit from an additional floater day to bring them to three in total, says the union. The three-year agreement covers 43 full-time employees working at the centre, says the union. Workers at Montreal's Julliette & Chocolat unionize MONTREAL — Restaurant workers at the Juliette & Choco- lat restaurant and chocolate shop in Montreal are the newest members of United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) Canada, Local 500. A request for certification was filed by the local union in late August and was recently con- firmed by Quebec's Administra- tive Labour Tribunal. This is the first group of employees at the Juliette & Chocolat chain to join UFCW, says the union.
