2 Canadian HR Reporter, a HAB Press business 2020 CUPE reaches tentative deal with Toronto TORONTO — A tentative agree- ment was reached on March 14 between the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE, Local 79 and the City of Toronto. Negotiators reached the agreement following several days of round-the-clock bar- gaining ahead of a midnight strike deadline, says CUPE. If approved by CUPE, Local 79 members and Toronto City Council, the tentative agree- ment will be in effect for five years, says the union. Unifor, Air Canada workers ratify contract TORONTO — Unifor mem- bers working as customer sales and service agents and custom- er relations representatives at Air Canada ratified a collective agreement on March 16. "We have not only negotiated historic wage increases eliminat- ing the two-tier wage scale, but in doing so have created a higher standard for those working in the service industry," says Jerry Dias, Unifor national president. The collective agreement in- cludes improvements to wages and benefits, improved job security provisions and an en- hanced flexible time bank, says the union. Under previous contracts, workers hired after 2004 were paid less. Those members will see an increase of up to 75 per cent in compensation over the life of the collective agreement, says Unifor. Unifor 2002 represents 5,600 employees at Air Canada. First contracts for 2 Alberta Chartwells SHERWOOD PARK/ST. The two new units comprise about 200 members — who will join amalgamated USW, Local 1-207 — and they include licensed practical nurses (LPN), activity aides, cooks and housekeepers, says the union. Workers at Chartwell Coun- try Cottage Sherwood Park obtained multiple key advance- ments through their agree- ments, including wage increas- es, maternity and paternity leave as wells bereavement leave. The four-year contract at Chartwell's St. Albert facility included im- proved seniority and overtime language, wage increases and vacation time, says USW. The negotiating committees spent more than a year working to get the employer to bargain a fair contract, says the union. Improved wages for pharmacy workers SUDBURY, Ont. — United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) Canada, Local 175 members working at Medi- cal Pharmacies in Sudbury, Ont. achieved a new union contract on March 14 that will see wage improvements for employees. The union negotiating com- mittee was successful in replac- ing a three-tier wage grid with a single grid, resulting in wage increases for both full-time and part-time workers. Employees will receive the first increase retroactively for hours worked since the expiry of the previous agreement, says the union. Red-circled employees at Medical Pharmacies will see an increase of 1.2 per cent in each year of the agreement. As well, the lead hand premium increas- es to $1 per hour, up from the current rate of $0.65 per hour, says UFCW. The committee secured a $50 improvement to the employees' uniform allowance: full-time workers currently receive $200 per year, while part-time work- ers currently receive $150 per year, says the union.
