join UFCW
THUNDER BAY, Ont. —
Workers at a Wendy's restau-
rant on Memorial Avenue in
Thunder Bay, Ont., voted March
8 to join the United Food and
Commercial Workers Canada
(UFCW) union.
The issues that brought the
employees — who are mostly
young workers — to seek union
representation with UFCW,
Local 175, ranged from poor
workplace conditions to unfair
scheduling practices, as well as
workplace harassment, intimi-
dation, and threats that their
jobs would be replaced with
temporary foreign workers, ac-
cording to the union.
"Workers in the fast food in-
dustry are often treated by their
employers as disposable," said
Shawn Haggerty, president of
UFCW Canada, Local 175.
Local 175 will now begin the
process of negotiating a first
collective agreement with the
employer, according to the
union.

reaches deal
with
University
of Guelph
GUELPH, Ont. — The union
representing trades, mainte-
nance and service workers at the
University of Guelph reached a
tentative agreement March 12.
Negotiators for Local 1334 of
the Canadian Union of Public
Employees (CUPE) reached a
deal with the Ontario university,
averting a potential lockout or
strike that could have begun as
early as March 13, according to
the union.
It is expected that the union
will hold a ratification meet-
ing early next week to present
the agreement to members for
a vote on whether to accept or
reject it.
Until members have had a
chance to review and make a
decision on the tentative agree-
ment, CUPE 1334 will make no
further public statements.
CN reaches
tentative
agreement
with IBEW
MONTREAL — Canadian Na-
tional Railway (CN) negotiated
a tentative agreement March 20
with the International Broth-
erhood of Electrical Workers
(IBEW) to renew the labour con-
tract for about 700 CN signals
and communications employees
in Canada.
Details of the tentative agree-
ment are being withheld pend-
ing ratification by the union's
membership. CN expects to
hear the results of the IBEW's
ratification vote in May, accord-
ing to the company.
CN moves more than $250
billion worth of goods annually
for a range of business sectors,
ranging from resource products
to manufactured products to
consumer goods, across a rail
network spanning Canada and
mid-America.
