locks out

LANGLEY, B.C. — On April 1,
Canada Bread locked out Bakery,
Confectionary, Tobacco, Work-
ers and Grain Millers (BCTGM),
Local 468 employees who work in
the Langley, B.C., bakery.
Canada Bread met with the
BCTGM Local 468 for 11 days
during the past three months
to negotiate the renewal of their
collective agreement, according
to the company.
The Langley bakery employs
200 associates, 160 of whom are
in the bargaining unit represent-
ed by BCTGM Local 468, said
Canada Bread.
Grand River
Transit strike
averted in
Ontario
WATERLOO, Ont. — Work-
ers at the Grand River Transit
Authority in Ontario reached
a tentative agreement April 2,
averting a strike set to begin
in Kitchener-Waterloo and
Cambridge on April 3.
"After intense negotiations
this weekend, the union is
pleased to have reached a mutual
agreement with the employer to
address Unifor's main concerns,
and will keep our drivers on the
road serving the people of Kitch-
ener-Waterloo and Cambridge,"
said Tim Mitchell, Unifor na-
tional representative.
A strike deadline for April 3
had been announced, in an ef-
fort to give the public ample
notice and an opportunity to
make alternative arrangements
for travel. Transit services were
to continue, pending ratification
vote, according to the union.
Details of the new contract are
to be released once a deal is been
ratified.
Workplace health and safety
and other issues were the main
topics in the negotiations, which
started back in December, said
Unifor.
Local 4304 represents more
than 600 transit operators,
service attendants and skilled
trades workers employed at
Grand River Transit.
Workers at
Mondiv
in Quebec get
fi rst contract
BOISBRIAND, Que. — United
Food and Commercial Workers
Canada (UFCW) Local 1991P
members working at Mondiv
in Boisbriand, Que., signed
their first collective agreement
March 27.
Mondiv is a division of Las-
sonde Specialities, which manu-
factures food products such as
sauces, broths, marinades and
soups.
The more than 100 mem-
bers at Mondiv work as cooks,
machine operators, forklift
operators, electro-mechanical
technicians, carpenters and as
production workers.
The new agreement brings
wage adjustments of 1.3 per cent
and raises of 2.25 per cent per
year, said the union.
It also acknowledges the sum-
mer months as prime vacation
time for members, according to
UFCW.
The three-year agreement will
run until Sept. 30, 2019.
