Teamsters
ratify new deal
LAVAL, Que. — Workers at
GardaWorld Cash Services af-
filiated with Teamsters Canada
ratified a new collective agree-
ment May 29.
Truck safety was the main
issue in the negotiations. The
company's fleet of trucks will
meet higher safety levels, there-
fore giving more protection to
the workers. Workers are also
getting wage and benefit im-
provements, according to Team-
sters.
Local unions 419 and 879 rep-
resent more than 600 workers at
GardaWorld in Ontario.
The new contract expires in
2021.
Daycare,
library
join MGEU
WINNIPEG — The Pas Re-
gional Library (Local 440), and
Les Tournesols de Saint-Vital
(Local 441) — both in Manitoba
— joined Manitoba Govern-
ment and General Employees'
Union (MGEU) in May.
Nine workers from The Pas
Regional Library voted to join
the MGEU, while 24 employees
of Les Tournesols de Saint-Vital
agreed to certify, said the union.
Local 441 members provide
Francophone child care, a ser-
vice that's in high demand in
South Winnipeg, according to
MGEU.
The new additions join four
new locals who have come
onboard within the past two
months.
All have organized with the
union after the introduction
of Bill 7, which made joining a
union more difficult for workers,
said the union.
The first step for both locals
is to hold elections and estab-
lish bargaining committees who
will be working to negotiate the
library and the daycare's first col-
lective agreements.
Loomis,
Unifor sign
agreement
VANCOUVER — A tentative
agreement reached on May 1
was ratified May 23 by Unifor
members at Loomis Express.
The new four-year contract
includes a 10 per cent wage in-
crease and a pension hike.
The deal also eliminated the
ability to contract out work, said
the union.
Unifor represents 1,600 work-
ers at Loomis Express. The
membership includes hourly
drivers, owner-operators, call-
centre staff, clerical and ware-
house workers.
The previous contract expired
on March 31, 2017.
First contract
for Quebec
crossing
guards
TROIS-RIVIÈREs, Que. —
School crossing guards in Trois-
Rivières, Que., signed their first
collective agreement May 23.
The agreement includes wage
increases of three per cent per
year over the next five years, said
the union.
The guards joined the Cana-
dian Union of Public Employees
(CUPE) in 2015.
"We worked hard to bring the
crossing guards to a level simi-
lar to that of other comparable
workers in Quebec," said Nina
Laflamme, CUPE representa-
tive.
