CORNWALL, Ont. — The On-
tario Ministry of Labour issued
a "no-board report," setting a
strike or lockout deadline for
Cornwall municipal workers of
12:01 a.m. on May 17.
The workers — who are rep-
resented by Canadian Union of
Public Employees (CUPE), Lo-
cals 234, 3251-01 and 5734 —
work for the city in outside jobs,
at the library, and as paramedics.
Members of CUPE Local 1792
— who work at long-term care
home Glen Stor Dun Lodge —
have also requested a "no-board,
report" but as they do not have
the right to strike, their issues
will be resolved by interest arbi-
tration, said the union.
"We formally offered them
every day except one, between
now and the May 17 deadline,"
said Alison Denis, CUPE na-
tional representative. "This is
ample opportunity to avoid a
work stoppage if they want to.
We hope they take us up on the
offer."
The workers have been with-
out a contract since 2015 (in the
case of the library) and 2016 (in
the case of the others), according
to CUPE.
Paramedics' right to strike is
partially limited by an essential
services agreement between the
parties, which is a requirement
of the Ambulance Services Col-
lective Bargaining Act.
Arrell Youth
Centre workers
locked out
HAMILTON, Ont. — After de-
manding that the 60 members
of Ontario Public Service Em-
ployees Union (OPSEU), Local
216 take a significant cut to their
health plan, managers of the Ar-
rell Youth Centre in Hamilton,
Ont., locked out employees on
April 27.
"This employer should be
ashamed of using kids in dire
need of help in a powerplay
against our members," said War-
ren (Smokey) Thomas, OPSEU
president. "Our members deeply
care about the kids they're look-
ing after."
Arrell Youth Centre is a
residential detention centre in
Hamilton that provides secure
custody and program services
for up to 16 male youth. For the
past two years, it has been oper-
ating at capacity. The members
of Local 216 have been without a
contract since April 1, 2017, said
the union.
Employees have no Work-
place Safety and Insurance
Board (WSIB) coverage and al-
ready pay the cost of their long-
term disability, said the union.
Tentative
agreement
for Gatineau,
Que., workers
GATINEAU, Que. — City
of Gatineau, Que., municipal
workers — who recently joined
Canadian Union of Public Em-
ployees (CUPE) — ratified a ten-
tative agreement on April 24.
Having been without a labour
contract for more than three
years, about 900 union members
voted 97 per cent in favour of the
agreement, said the union.
Following a union card mem-
bership blitz and the submis-
sion of an certification applica-
tion, the Gatineau White-Collar
Workers' Union — which had
not been affiliated with any
union federation in 30 years —
decided to join CUPE.
