8 UPDATE Administrative Assistant's UPDATE JULY 2018 Are you addicted to your smartphone? How far do you get from your phone when you're away from work and trying to achieve some kind of work-life balance? Not far enough, according to an article by Lesley Alder- man in the recent New York Times expansive feature "How to Make Work Much Better." Our "intimate relationship" with our phones can go too far, says Alderman, interfering with human love: "old fashioned face-to-face intimacy with that living and breath- ing being you call your partner, spouse, lover or significant other." When you're checking your phone, you're sending a message that you find the phone more interesting than your partner. In other words, you're not being "present," which is key to a healthy relationship, says James Roberts, author of "Too Much of a Good Thing: Are You Addicted to Your Smartphone?" There is increasing awareness that that is what could be happening, says Judith Bell, a leadership coach and co- founder of Relationships That Work. She has noticed that clients now turn off their phones when they are in session. Awareness is the first step in setting aside the phone in order to reconnect with one's partner, says Lesley Alder- man. Then try some of the following: Establish "no cell" zones in the home, such as the kitchen or living room – even your car when you're there with your partner. Try a phone-free bedroom for a week, sending a mes- sage to your partner about your priorities. Keep phones off the table, at home or in a restaurant, promoting a more fulfilling conversation. Practice phone etiquette. If you must take a call, an- nounce that you are doing so. Talk about phone issues with your partner and decide on mutually acceptable rules.
