resort workers
sign new
contract
GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR,
N.L. — United Food and Com-
mercial Workers Canada
(UFCW), Local 1252 members
and hospitality workers in New-
foundland and Labrador won a
new contract on Sept. 29 with
the Mount Peyton Resort and
Conference Centre, located in
Grand Falls-Windsor, N.L.
The new three-year deal in-
cludes wage increases through-
out the contract as well as other
important gains, including in-
creased staff premiums, training
allowance, night shift premiums
and enhanced bereavement
leave, said the union.
Mount Peyton offers accom-
modations and amenities for
groups of all sizes.
UFCW members work in
a number of roles, including
cooks, bartenders, housekeep-
ers, front-end staff and mainte-
nance.
Toronto
airport
screeners
ratify deal
TORONTO — Airport security
screeners at Toronto's Pearson
and Billy Bishop Airports rati-
fied a new collective agreement
on Sept. 26.
The 2,300 screeners — mem-
bers of International Associa-
tion of Machinists and Aero-
space Workers (IAM), Local
2921, employed by Garda Cana-
da — agreed to a new three-year
contract, said the union.
The contract provides wage
increases consisting of a $2,000
lump-sum payment for full-time
employees and a $1,000 lump-
sum payment for part-time em-
ployees plus a 2.25 per cent wage
increase upon ratification, ac-
cording to IAM.
Workers will also receive a
wage increase of 2.25 per cent
effective April 1, 2019, and a
2.5-per-cent wage increase ef-
fective April 1, 2020, said the
union.
Other agreement highlights
effective April 1, 2020, include
an additional $0.05-per-hour
pension contribution to be paid
by the employer, improved con-
tract language regarding break
times and improved language
regarding payroll errors, said the
union.
IAM also represents airport
security screeners in Vancouver
and is the largest union in Cana-
da's air transport sector.
B.C. municipal
workers
join CUPE
FORT ST. JAMES, B.C. — Fort
St. James municipal workers in
British Columbia agreed to join
the Canadian Union of Public
Employees (CUPE) on Sept. 27.
Workers for the District —
located 40 kilometres north of
Vanderhoof and two hours from
Prince George — will be repre-
sented by CUPE 4951, said the
union.
"We are excited to combine
our voices with the workers of
Fort St. James, and look forward
to working with the employer
on a first agreement," said Lily
Bachand, CUPE 4951 president.
The newest members of
CUPE 4951 include library,
economic development office,
arena, public works and other
municipal service workers, said
the union.
"(Myself ) and council look
forward to reaching an agree-
ment with CUPE Local 4951 that
is fair and equitable," said Mayor
Rob MacDougall.
CUPE 4951 represents more
than 325 members across several
communities of northern British
Columbia.
