fi rst contract
HALIFAX — United Food and
Commercial Workers union
(UFCW) Canada, Local 864
members working at the Hil-
ton Garden Inn Airport Halifax
hotel ratified a first collective
agreement on April 27 that in-
cludes wage gains of up to 15 per
cent.
The hotel is located minutes
away from the Halifax Stanfield
International Airport. The em-
ployees are room attendants and
work in laundry services, said
the union.
In addition to wages increas-
es, some of the other gains in-
clude increased paid vacation
days, additional paid sick days
and holidays, a formal grievance
procedure and enhanced job se-
curity, said UFCW.
Quebec lab
technicians
sign fi rst
contract
SAINT-HYACINTHE, Que.
— United Food and Commer-
cial Workers (UFCW) Canada,
Local 1991P members working
at Semex in Saint-Hyacinthe,
Que., ratified their first collec-
tive agreement on April 25.
"The new collective
agreement improves job
compensation and security and
will provide an excellent level
of working conditions for the
members working at Semex in
the Montérégie region," said
Mario Maisonneuve, UFCW
Local 1991P president.
The contract covers 35
employees who work as
laboratory technicians at the
company, said the union.
Semex specializes in the
development and marketing
of bull semen for breeding in
the cattle and dairy industries,
according to UFCW.
Some of the gains achieved in-
clude an wage increase from $19
to $25, the addition of six sick
leave days and a pension plan
contribution of five per cent by
the employer, said the union.
Village Green
long-term
care workers
join OPSEU
SELBY, Ont. — About 70
workers at the Village Green
long-term care facility outside
of Kingston, Ont., joined the
Ontario Public Service Em-
ployees Union (OPSEU) on
April 25.
"Doug Ford has promised to
increase long-term care beds
in the province by 15,000 over
the next 10 years," said Eduardo
(Eddy) Almeida, OPSEU first
vice-president.
"But we need to make sure
that those beds are properly
supported by workers who have
the time and tools they need to
provide quality care."
Along with better benefits for
all, OPSEU is also seeking better
protection for part-time work-
ers, said the union.
MEC workers
in Vancouver
join UFCW
VANCOUVER — Retail work-
ers at Mountain Equipment Co-
op (MEC) in Vancouver are the
newest members of United Food
and Commercial Workers union
(UFCW) Canada, Local 1518
after voting on April 23 to join
the union.
"We have a lot of experience
with co-ops and we are excited
to add MEC to that group,"
said Kim Novak, UFCW 1518
president.
