"Talks are not progressing as we hoped," said Mike Bellerose, president of CUPE, Local 4705. "We've been in bargaining for nearly three months, and we are concerned that we are getting close to an impasse. We hope that the assistance of a provin- cial mediator might help unlock these talks in a productive way." The union's collective agree- ments expired on March 31. Talks are scheduled with a me- diator appointed by the Ministry of Labour, said the union. Employees at the Mabin School join union TORONTO — Staff at The Mabin School in Toronto seek- ing greater job security, trans- parency and a voice in how they are compensated, voted to unionize with Unifor on July 4. The school serves students from junior kindergarten to grade 6. "We are thrilled to welcome the Mabin School employees as new members into Unifor and our local," said Paul Morse, presi- dent of Local 87-M, which serves more than 1,700 members. More than 80 per cent of the staff voted for the union last month, said Unifor. Among the first tasks for the new Mabin School union's bar- gaining committee is to deter- mine the members' priorities and negotiate a first collective agreement with the employer, said the union.
