2 Canadian HR Reporter, a HAB Press business 2019 Unifor Metro workers in Ontario reach tentative deal TORONTO — Unifor members of Local 414 reached a tentative agreement with Metro grocery stores. The new contract covers about 4,000 workers at 27 loca- tions across Ontario. The tentative agreement will be presented to members for a ratification vote in the coming days. Details of the new contract will be released upon ratifica- tion, said the union. If ratified, the new four-year agreement will expire on July 16, 2023, said unifor. "This agreement continues our work to raise the bar for our retail members," said Gord Cur- rie, president of Unifor Local 414. "As one of the country's larg- est retail worker unions, Unifor is fighting back against the flood of part-time work and is leading the push to increase wages and improve working conditions." AAA Canada workers in Montreal vote to unionize MONTREAL — Workers at AAA Canada in Montreal voted 84 per cent to join the Interna- tional Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), Local 1758 on July 18. The provincial certification means the IAM will represent every one of the workers (ex- cluding office workers) in Que- bec employed by AAA Canada, said the union. "Our organizers worked very hard to get the vote out," says Jean-Marc Brunet, lead orga- nizer for IAM District Lodge 11. "Many of these new members al- ready work in places represented by the IAM as subcontractors (Bombardier, Airbus)." The Quebec Labour Board forced a mail-in vote lasting one month, which added to the over- all length of the campaign, said IAM. AAA Canada is a manufactur- ing company that offers special- ized subcontracting and techni- cal assistance services related to industrialization, production and supplier monitoring pro- cesses in the aerospace and transportation sectors. The IAM represents about 10,000 members working in the Canadian aerospace sector. B.C. school workers ratify contract NA NA IM O/L A DYSMI TH, B.C. — CUPE 606, K-12 sup- port workers at School District 68 in Nanaimo-Ladysmith, B.C., reached a tentative agreement on July 14 following many ses- sions of bargaining that began in early April. The tentative agreement in- corporates the provincial frame- work agreement approved by the K-12 presidents council in September. The current K-12 agreement expired on June 30, 2019. When ratified by CUPE locals and school district boards of trustees, the collective agree- ment will be in effect from July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2022. Further details of the tentative agreement will be available after ratification by all parties, which is expected to be completed in this month. "Our committee was pleased with the outcome," said CUPE 606 president Rob Zver. "We were able to achieve improve- ments that will touch almost all members." CUPE 606 members, who provide services that support students, include education assistants, family youth child support workers, Indigenous support workers, custodians, clerical, trades, maintenance, grounds, IT, community school coordinators, cafeteria work- ers, administrative support, bus drivers, and Strong Start workers. The Local of 700-plus members provides K-12 sup- port in 27 elementary and seven secondary schools in SD68 (Na- naimo-Ladysmith). CUPE 1091, K-12 support workers at School District 37 also reached agreement on July 11 after bargaining that began in early May. When ratified by CUPE lo- cals and school district boards of trustees, the collective agree- ment will be in effect from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2022. Further details of the tentative agree- ment will not be available until after ratification, says the union.
