2 Canadian HR Reporter, a Key Media business 2019 Le Germain Hotel workers in Toronto unionize TORONTO — Food service workers at Le Germain Hotel in Toronto become the newest United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) Canada, Local 175 members on Aug. 23. About 30 employees work as servers, cooks, stewards and bartenders. The workers saw the benefits of belonging to a union as there were other employees in the hotel already unionized, says the union. Workers cited wage increases and transparency in the way tips are distributed as main concerns and a reason for contacting the union, says UFCW. Hornby Island recycling workers join CUPE COURTENAY, B.C. — Eight workers at the Hornby Island Recycling Depot in Courte- nay, B.C. become members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) on Aug. 23 when they voted to unionize a labour board certification. "These members will be a great fit with our municipal workers in the Comox Valley and we look forward to meeting with them, and to bargain their first contract," says Karen Gar- rett, CUPE 556 president. The whole community is rightly proud of the recycling depot that is managed by a com- munity-based group, the HIR- RA (Hornby Island Residents and Ratepayers Association), and run by their newest mem- bers, says Garrett. CUPE 556, Comox Valley Mu- nicipal Workers represents mu- nicipal workers in the Comox Valley, the City of Courtenay, the Town of Comox, the Village of Cumberland, the Comox Val- ley Regional District, along with their newest members on Horn- by Island. Carewest nurses in Calgary join UNA CALGARY — The United Nurs- es of Alberta (UNA) welcomed registered nurses employed by Carewest Glenmore Park in southwest Calgary as the new- est members of the union on Aug. 21. The bargaining unit of 60 reg- istered nurses voted to join UNA and their application to join the union was approved by the Al- berta Labour Relations Board on Aug. 7, says UNA. As soon as possible, UNA will negotiate a first collective agree- ment for the new members, who worked without representation by a union before the vote. UNA members employed at Carew- est Glenmore Park have not yet been assigned to a UNA Local, says the union. UNA also represents regis- tered nurses employed at Care- west Colonel Belcher, Carewest Rouleau Manor, Carewest Sar- cee/C3 Beddington and Carew- est Signal Pointe in Calgary. Northwood Lodge Home workers unionize RED LAKE, Ont. — The Ontar- io Nurses' Association (ONA) said new members from North- wood Lodge Home for the Aged joined the union on Aug. 20. "The registered nurses work- ing for this Red Lake, Ont. home have concerns about their heavy workloads, which they say im- pedes their ability to provide the kind of care their vulnerable residents need and deserve," says Vicki McKenna, ONA president. One of the services of signifi- cance to ONA members experi- encing short-staffed workplaces is a professional-responsibility clause, which provides a process for addressing workloads that interfere with registered nurses meeting their professional stan- dards, says the union. ONA is the union represent- ing more than 65,000 registered nurses and health-care profes- sionals, as well as 18,000 nurs- ing student affiliates, providing care in hospitals, long-term care facilities, public health, the com- munity, clinics and industry.
