2 Canadian HR Reporter, a HAB Press business 2019 Ottawa security guards join UFCW OTTAWA — Security guards working for Commissionaires Ottawa at the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) headquarters are the newest members of United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) Canada, Local 333 after voting to join the union on Sept. 4. The security guards voted unanimously in favour of join- ing UFCW in order to gain better wages, benefits and job security. They join many other Com- missionaires employees in Ot- tawa and Hamilton who have chosen UFCW 333 as their voice at work, says the union. "Our union looks forward to helping [the workers] build a better life as we work to negoti- ate a first collective agreement," says Richard McNaughton, UFCW, Local 333 president. UFCW Canada Local 333 rep- resents thousands of workers in the security industry. New Brunswick mill workers join union BATHURST, N.B. — Workers at Chaleur Sawmills in Belle- dune, N.B., joined Unifor on Sept. 4. Workers from the nearby For- nebu lumber mill in Bathurst, N.B., assisted in the effort to help Chaleur workers join Unifor, says the union. "Workers see what Unifor is doing in this sector. They look at our contracts and how much we are able to achieve through collective bargaining, and they want to be part of it," says Kel- lie Scanlan, Unifor organizing director. The 180 workers at the mill — which was recently pur- chased by the Kilmer Group — join more than 22,000 forestry workers who are already part of Unifor. The workers joined Unifor through automatic certification, meaning that once a majority of workers at the plant signed a union card, Unifor was certified at the mill on Aug. 30, says the union. "What a great way for these workers to celebrate Labour Day: by joining a union," says Linda MacNeil, Atlantic region- al director. 4-year deal signed at Gallant Trucking KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Employ- ees of Gallant Trucking, based in Kamloops, B.C., ratified a new four-year collective agreement on Aug. 29. The agreement provides em- ployees with 50 per cent em- ployer-paid CLAC Gold Plus benefits plan. In addition, the employer will match up to $1,500 per year of an employee's voluntary RSP con- tributions, says the union. The employees work as driv- ers, swampers, mechanics and dispatchers/foremen in Kam- loops and the surrounding area. The six employees are mem- bers of the Transport, Marine, Warehousing and Allied Work- ers Union, CLAC Local 66. Kingston, Ont. long-term care workers unionize KINGSTON, ONT. — The Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA) welcomed new regis- tered nurses (RN) from Revera Arbour Heights in Kingston, Ont. to membership in the union on Sept. 4. The RNs are concerned about changes to their workplace fol- lowing the recent purchase of the home by Revera. As in many long-term care homes, the RNs say the work- place is short-staffed, says ONA. ONA is the union represent- ing more than 65,000 regis- tered nurses and health-care professionals, as well as 18,000 nursing student affiliates, pro- viding care in hospitals, long- term care facilities, public health, the community, clinics and industry.
