2 Canadian HR Reporter, a HAB Press business 2019 Military family centre workers sign new agreement LONDON, Ont. — Employees at the Military Family Resource Centre (MRFC) in London, Ont. ratified a new contract on Sept. 5. During this round of bargain- ing, the parties requested the assistance of a conciliation of- ficer from the Ministry of La- bour, says the United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) Canada, Locals 175 and 633. At the start of negotiations, the employer was unwilling to provide substantial monetary increases to its bargaining unit employees, says the union. Through conciliation though, the union negotiating commit- tee achieved an agreement with no concessions for employees at MRFC, says UFCW. The ratified agreement pro- vides workers with wage in- creases in each of the three years covered by the contract. The first increase of one per cent will be paid retroactively for hours worked since March 31. Members will receive a raise of 0.5 per cent in year two and 1.5 per cent in year three, says the union. Improved language in the agreement provides better be- reavement provisions that in- creases the qualifier to a larger scale, amended hours of work to provide more flexibility for members to adjust their sched- ules, enhanced grievance proce- dure for members to address is- sues with management and new provisions to allows stewards time to meet new members and introduce them to the union and their collective agreement, says UFCW. Trench Electric workers sign 3-year deal SCARBOROUGH, Ont. — Workers at Trench Electric in Scarborough, Ont. ratified a three-year collective agree- ment with their employer on Sept. 25. "We wanted to see improve- ments across the board for our members and that's exactly what we got," says Anand Boodhai, Unifor, Local 303 president. "The results clearly show the strength our union has when it comes to bargaining." The new contract was ratified by 92 per cent and it replaces the previous one which had expired in March 2019, says the union, adding it brings a round of diffi- cult negotiations to a close. The new contract includes gains in virtually all areas of the employee's collective agree- ment, says the union. They include wage increases of six per cent over the term of the contract as well as improve- ments to paramedical, vision and dental-care benefits, shift premiums and funds for safety boots and uniforms, says Uni- for. Workers at Trench Electric manufacture electrical products for use in power utilities, engi- neering, procurement and con- struction companies and high energy usage industries. First contract for Duke of Marlborough workers CHURCHILL, Man. — Em- ployees at the Duke of Marl- borough School, who work in the nursery 12 school in Churchill, Man., recently voted to accept their first contract on Sept. 23. The new one-year agree- ment (effective July 1) provides 21 Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU), Local 446 members with a wage increase, a boost to their remoteness allowance and the introduction of sev- eral policies and provisions that the union was seeking in their first collective agreement, says MGEU. The employees covered by the contract include educational as- sistants, custodians and main- tenance workers, as well as the school librarian, counselor, and secretary, says the union. The next step for the union will be to have the new agree- ment finalized and signed before distribution to members, says MGEU.
