2 Canadian HR Reporter, a HAB Press business 2019 Deal reached at Kingston, Ont. daycare KINGSTON, Ont. — A tenta- tive agreement was reached in Kingston, Ont. between work- ers from the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Lo- cal 3625 and Something Special Children's Centre on Nov. 15. The two sides met for the sec- ond time since the lockout began on Nov. 1, says CUPE. Details will not be shared un- til the members of CUPE 3625 have an opportunity to review the agreement and vote, says the union. Something Special Children's Centre was open on Nov. 18, says CUPE. St. John's Loblaw talks break off ST. JOHN'S — Negotiations be- tween Unifor and Loblaw Com- panies in St. John's reached an impasse on Nov. 18, as the com- pany refused to revisit its plan to cut full-time jobs at Dominion stores, say the union. Improving job security in the face of technological change, enhancing work standards and protecting full-time are central priorities, says the union. Unifor fought Loblaw's plan to cut full-time jobs and expand part-time hiring when it was an- nounced in June 2019. Loblaw, Canada's largest food retailer, earned more than $800 million in net profit last year, says Unifor. Full-time positions in the province's 11 stores have now been reduced to just 17 per cent of the workforce, says the union. The union represents more than 1,300 members at Domin- ion stores across Newfoundland and Labrador. The current col- lective agreement expired on Oct. 28. The union plans to file for provincial conciliation immi- nently, it says. New contract for workers at Lakeridge Health OSHAWA, Ont. — Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) hospital profession- als with Local 348 at Lakeridge Health in Durham Region, Ont. signed a new collective agree- ment on Nov. 8. It includes wage gains, an in- lieu percentage increase for for- mer Ontario Nurses Association (ONA) and non-union employ- ees, and scheduling improve- ments, says the union. It's the first agreement since Lakeridge merged with the for- mer Rouge Valley Health System and the Pinewood Centre in February 2018, increasing union membership by more than 1,000, says OPSEU. "This was an extremely diffi- cult round of bargaining. It was the first that brought together different terms and working conditions for OPSEU mem- bers, prior ONA members and prior non-union members," says Sara Labelle, chair of OPSEU's hospital professionals division. "Arbitrator Christopher Albertyn awarded outstanding issues to wages, benefits, and scheduling." Workers at Victoria Event Centre unionize VICTORIA — Hospitality work- ers at the Victoria Event Centre (VEC) in Victoria voted to join- ing the United Food and Com- mercial Workers union (UFCW) Canada, Local 1518 on Nov. 16. Lack of workplace standards, poor working conditions and sex- ual harassment were just some of the reasons VEC workers union- ized, according to the UFCW. "While the VEC does better than many employers to pro- mote a safe and harassment-free workplace, we voted to join the union to keep the standards we have and continue to build for the future," says Shelby Gerrath, a bartender and front-of-house supervisor at VEC. The Victoria Event Centre is operated by the Victoria Multicul- tural Society, a non-profit organi- zation that promotes diversity, arts and community through perfor- mance and celebration. The venue is part of Victoria's downtown night scene, showcasing experi- mental and emerging artists along with dance parties and festivals for the past 16 years, says UFCW.
