2 Canadian HR Reporter, a HAB Press business 2020 Winnipeg Maple Leaf workers sign deal WINNIPEG — Food processing workers at Maple Leaf Foods in Winnipeg, who are represented by the United Food and Com- mercial Workers union (UFCW) Canada, Local 832, achieved a new contract on Jan. 15. The new contract brings in many improvements, including: • wage increases well above the rate of inflation • $500,000 for reclassification of jobs • more than $1.4 million in new pension payments • workers will be able to bank overtime as personal days, and any unused days will be paid out at the end of the year • a new joint employment proj- ect where persons with dis- abilities will be hired and sup- ported. The union represents 1,900 workers at Maple Leaf Foods, who work in the kill and cut op- erations at the plant. CUPE Toronto members deliver strong strike mandate TORONTO — The City of To- ronto's outside workers — repre- sented by Local 416 of the Cana- dian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) — voted on Jan. 14 and 15 in favour of taking strike action if a contract cannot be reached. "We have to be prepared, which is why we decided to hold the strike vote now. I wouldn't read too much into it, discus- sions with the city will continue. Our objective has always been to get a fair deal for our members at the bargaining table," says Eddie Mariconda, CUPE 416 presi- dent. "But the City needs to know how serious our members are about negotiating a fair contract." CUPE 416 and the City of To- ronto will begin meeting with a provincially appointed concili- ation officer later this month. Their last contract expired on Dec. 31. Charges laid against Southlake health centre TORONTO — Charges against Southlake Regional Health Cen- tre in Newmarket, Ont. were laid on Jan. 20 after a workplace-vio- lence incident. The Ministry of Labour charged the employer with nine counts under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), says the Ontario Nurses' Asso- ciation (ONA). These charges relate to a January 2019 incident in which a registered nurse was attacked in an incident at Southlake. A security guard was also injured, says the union. Arbitrator awards OPSEU pharm techs wage hike TORONTO — Ontario phar- macy technicians were awarded a six per cent wage increase on Jan. 6 after arbitrator Diane Gee handed down an award. The ruling affects Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) registered pharmacy technician members in 60 bargaining units from hos- pitals across Ontario. The decision is retroactive to June 30, 2016. In 2010, the Ontario govern- ment told pharmacy techni- cians they would be regulated by the Ontario College of Phar- macists, says OPSEU. The liability of this increase and subsequent retroactivity for the participating hospitals was more than $3 million and was not subject to the cur- rent government's wage-cap legislation Bill 124, which was passed in November, says the union. "This award is not only good for pharmacy technicians ev- erywhere, but sets a terrific precedent for health-care pro- fessionals of all stripes who have been forced into wages lower than what their qualifications call for," says Sandi Blancher, chair of the OPSEU HPD cen- tral reclassification commit- tee. "This benchmark ensures maintained professionalism, excellence, and improves lives."
