"After constant late-payment issues, as well as sick leave prob- lems and missed overtime pay, workers at the Premium Plaza Lounge decided to unionize," says Jeff Traeger, UFCW Local 832 President. Tentative deal at Trent University PETERBOROUGH, Ont. — A tentative agreement was reached on Feb. 28 between Trent Univer- sity in Peterborough, Ont. and the union representing the insti- tution's part-time instructors. Negotiators for the Cana- dian Union of Public Employ- ees (CUPE), Local 3908-1, and Trent reached the deal following a marathon round of bargain- ing between the parties, who were assisted by provincially- appointed mediator Gerry Lee, says the union. A labour disruption was avert- ed ahead of a March 2 deadline, says CUPE. "This wouldn't have been possible had it not been for the extraordinary support we've re- ceived from students and student groups, faculty and the broader Trent and Peterborough commu- nities," says Mitch Champagne, CUPE 3908 president. BCGEU senior-care workers sign deal VICTORIA — Following six months of negotiations, more than 500 British Columbia Gov- ernment and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU) members work- ing at Broadmead Care Society in Victoria ratified a deal on Feb. 26. Employees secured wage in- creases, weekend shift premi- ums and the continuation of short-term illness and injury plan benefits, says the union. "This news is most welcome in a sector that has been struggling for decades due to low wages and therefore the inability to retain qualified staff," says Stephanie Smith, BCGEU president. The government enacted leg- islation in the early 2000s that led to the deterioration of working conditions for health and social- sector workers, says BCGEU. The law stripped workplace protections and rights and en- abled contract-flipping which created lower wages. The gov- ernment repealed the laws in late 2018, says the union. Employees work as health- care workers, activity workers, social workers, therapy assistants and building-maintenance work- ers as well as in food service and administration. Bombardier Montreal workers agree to contract MONTREAL — Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) and Bombardier Transportation in Montreal reached a tentative deal on Feb. 17 to renew the col- lective agreement for about 200 workers. The agreement applies to lo- comotive engineers, conductors and shop staff in Montreal, says the union. Long B.C. strike ends in settlement VICTORIA — Sixty Interna- tional Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), Local 456 members working at three car dealerships in Nanai- mo and Victoria reached a ten- tative agreement with Subaru of Nanaimo, Mercedes-Benz Na- naimo and Three Point Motors Victoria on Feb. 13. The workers had been on strike since Dec. 13. The three-year agreement included wage increases, an increase in the tool allowance and a $1,000 signing bonus, says IAM.
