The five-year contract calls for wage hikes averaging out to two per cent annually, says the Canadian Union of Public Em- ployees (CUPE), which repre- sents the officers. Other gains include improve- ments to overtime during train- ing sessions, mandatory work and meetings along with an in- dexation of premiums. Chapters- Indigo workers join UFCW VAUGHAN, Ont. — Chap- ters-Indigo retail employees in Vaughan, Ont. joined the United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW), Local 1006A on Jan. 22. The online vote — conducted on Jan. 7 and 8 by the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) — resulted in the workers vot- ing overwhelmingly for union representation, says UFCW. About 30 employees at the Woodbridge Chapters location joined UFCW after successful unionization campaigns at the Mississauga Square One and Coquitlam, B.C. locations in late 2020, says the union. "During the pandemic, we continue to see strong inter- est from workers looking to join our union to make their workplace fairer and safer," says Wayne Hanley, president UFCW, Local 1006A. New 3-year agreement for Hobart employees TORONTO — Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), Local 235 working at Hobart Food Equip- ment Group Canada in Toronto ratified a new three-year agree- ment on Jan. 18. Due to COVID restrictions, the group met virtually to dis- cuss the changes to the collec- tive agreement and conducted their vote online, says the union. Changes to the new agree- ment included language im- provements, increases to pen- sions, boot allowances, on-call premiums, wages and the intro- duction of a family vision ben- efit, says IAM. The members consist of one warehouse worker and 12 ser- vice technicians who service Hobart Industrial food prepa- ration equipment used in res- taurants and the food industry across Ontario. Unifor reaches agreement with Team Industrial MARKHAM, Ont. — Unifor Locals 195, 698 , 815, 1285, and 1459 reached a tentative agree- ment on Jan. 22 with Team In- dustrial covering 350 cleaning and facility management work- ers at auto assembly plants and parts depots in Alberta, Ontar- io and Quebec. The two-year tentative agree- ment was reached after weeks of bargaining. Gains made include a signing bonus, wage increases, as well as numerous improve- ments to members' benefits coverage, says the union. Dismissal suit filed against hotel VANCOUVER — UNITE HERE, Local 40 announced that a class-action lawsuit has been filed against the Pan Pacific Vancouver on Jan. 20 on behalf of workers terminated during the COVID-19 pandemic. The suit — which was filed on behalf of current and former hourly employees — alleges the hotel misled workers, wrong- fully terminated them without cause or notice and they were denied pay owed to them for their years of service, says the union.
