Victoria budtenders join UFCW VICTORIA — The United Food and Commercial Work- ers union (UFCW), Local 1518 welcomed budtenders from the Victoria Cannabis Buyers Club on April 16. Workers at the medical can- nabis dispensary won job pro- tections along with paid staff meetings while they discuss a future contract with the em- ployer, says the union. "We're excited to advocate on behalf of the workers and support their non-profit's push to become a licensed medical cannabis distributor," says Kim Novak, UFCW 1518 president. The union and workers will begin negotiating workplace improvements with the employ- er over the next few months, says the union. Once a tentative collective agreement is in place, the workers will be able to vote over whether to accept the con- tract and retain their union rep- resentation, says UFCW. Bridlewood Trails workers join CUPE KANATA, Ont. — Workers at Bridlewood Trails Retirement Community in Kanata, Ont. voted almost unanimously on April 13 to join CUPE. "The pandemic has been very challenging for workers in re- tirement and long-term care residences. Now these workers have new rights and the backing of a strong union to help build a better, safer workplace for ev- eryone," says Marc Lafrance, a CUPE representative who is in- volved in the organizing drive. LTS employees ratify new contract CALGARY — CLAC, Local 63 members employed by LTS Build Services in Calgary unani- mously ratified a new collective agreement on April 12 provid- ing annual wage increases and improved contract language. The 30-month agreement provides wage increases of one per cent this year, 1.25 per- cent in 2022 and one per cent in 2023. In addition, improve- ments were made to contract language regarding best prac- tices and premiums for clarity and consistency, says CLAC New AUPE members at Edmonton Chartwell EDMONTON — The Alberta Union of Provincial Employ- ees (AUPE) welcomed about 100 new members at Chartwell Emerald Hills on April 13 after the Alberta Labour Relations Board (ALRB) certified the results of a mail-in ballot on March 9. "Like many other front-line workers working for private employers in long-term and continuing care, these mem- bers are looking for fairness from their employer and recog- nize that membership in AUPE is going to help them get it," says Susan Slade, AUPE vice- president. Chartwell Retirement Resi- dences — a real estate trust traded on the Toronto Stock Ex- change — is the largest private seniors housing and care opera- tor in Canada. USW signs agreement with ArcelorMittal SEPT-ÎLES, Que — The nego- tiating committee representing 2,500 members of the United Steelworkers (USW) in Port- Cartier, Fermont and Fire Lake in Quebec reached a tentative agreement on a new collective agreement on April 12 with Ar- celorMittal Mines Canada. Less than a week after con- tract negotiations broke off, bargaining resumed in the pres- ence of mediator Jean Nolin and a tentative deal was reached, says USW. The agreement will be submitted to a ratification vote by union members in com- ing weeks, says the union.
