Lévis workers reach tentative deal LÉVIS, Que. — The Lévis, Que. blue-collar union reached an tentative agreement with the city on May 19 to renew the collective agreement for more than 500 members. The deal was reached after a two-week blitz that concluded 17 months of negotiations. It will be presented to members for approval at a general meeting at the beginning of June, says the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). If ratified, the new collec- tive agreement will run until Dec. 31, 2024, says the union. "We had goals and we met them, while taking into account the needs of the City of Lévis," says Gérard Poirier, CUPE, Local 2334 president. 8-week strike at Magellan ends RENFREW, Ont. – More than 300 members of United Steelworkers (USW), Local 4820 have voted to end an eight-week strike against Magellan Aerospace at its foundry near Renfrew, Ont. A collective agreement between the union and Mississauga, Ont.- based Magellan includes wage increases of 4.6 per cent over three years, pension and benefit improvements, as well as better working conditions including hours-of-work provisions, says the union. "Our members fought for the respect they deserve and have won a contract that recog- nizes their ongoing contri- bution to the company and the community. Magellan is a major economic player in the Ottawa Valley and Ontario as a whole," says Marty Warren, USW Ontario director. Magellan workers at the Renfrew facility produce magne- sium and aluminum castings. Final Legal Aid workers join OPSEU TORONTO — The Legal Aid Ontario staff working in the eastern district have voted in favour of joining the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) on May 19. The 180,000-strong union now represents almost 500 staff at every Legal Aid Ontario office across the province, says OPSEU. "Congratulations and well done to all of our Legal Aid Ontario workers," says Warren (Smokey) Thomas, OPSEU president. "It wasn't always easy. But you stuck together, and now you can speak together as one." The newest members work in Legal Aid Ontario offices in Belleville, Napanee, Kingston, Brockville, Perth, Pembroke, Ottawa and Cornwall. Along with all Legal Aid Ontario workers, the staff at a number of community legal clinics – such as Durham Com- munity Legal Clinic and West Scarborough Community Legal – have also voted in favour of joining OPSEU, says the union. "The legal aid system suffered steep cuts before the pandemic, and the people who depend on legal aid have been hurting ever since," said OPSEU/SEFPO first vice president/treasurer Eduardo (Eddy) Almeida. First agreement for LTS Build in Manitoba WINNIPEG – Local 152 members, employed by LTS Build Services in Winnipeg, ratified their first collective agreement on May 18. The three-year agreement includes 100 per cent employer- paid benefits, retirement contri- butions, industry competitive wages, as well as wage increases. LTS Build Services is a divi- sion of Ledcor Group. It is the second division to begin work in Manitoba in the past four years. Local 152 members will be involved in the construction of new outside plant fibre optic tele- communications core infrastruc- ture in and around Winnipeg.
