"B
eing an adaptive organization is critical to spurring innovation," says
Mona Malone, CHRO and head of people and culture at BMO Financial
Group. "To be innovative, you really have to value education and learning
at an individual level, at a team level, and at an organizational level."
It is a corporate ethos that is working wonders for BMO Financial Group. For
many years, BMO has been a leader in gender equity, with more than 40 per cent
of senior leadership roles held by women. BMO has also been included in the
Bloomberg Gender Equality Index for six years running. "It's a belief that we have
a broader purpose about the role that BMO can play with our customers and with
the community overall," says Malone. "We see that come to life in the area of
diversity, equity and inclusion."
BMO Financial Group has implemented numerous DEI programs, including
the multi-year Zero Barriers to Inclusion strategy, True Name Debit Card in
support of the LGBTQ2+ communities and a Canadian Indigenous perspectives
learning initiative to advance truth and reconciliation through education. "We are
building empathy through education in our workforce," says Malone, noting that
BMO has a Corporate University, the BMO Institute For Learning (IFL) and BMO
U, a mobile 24/7 learning platform dedicated to employee education and building
skills for the job, career and the future, including in DEI.
"Education and development are a huge part of creating an innovative
organization where people can work on cross-functional teams and where
everyone brings their best self to work," says Malone.
