UfCW reaches
tentative agreement
with loblaws
TORONTO — UFCW Canada local unions
1000A, 175 and 633 reached a tentative
agreement with Loblaws Supermarkets.
The deal came on June 1 after seven
straight days of talks, including a weekend of
"marathon" negotiations, the union said.
Negotiations began in February 2015. The
parties were assisted in negotiations by a
provincial conciliation officer.
The agreement affects 28,000 grocery
workers across Ontario at Loblaws Great
Food and Superstores, Zehrs Great Food
and Superstores, Zehrs and Fortinos.
UFCW local unions' negotiating commit-
tees are unanimously recommending the
tentative agreement to members. Ratifica-
tion meetings are being scheduled across the
province.
According to the union, details of the
settlement will not be publicly released until
voting is concluded.
WestJet
fl ight attendants
ratify fi rst agreement
CALGARY — Nearly 3,000 flight attendants
at WestJet have ratified their very first con-
tract.
In early June, the Calgary-based airline's
employee association announced flight at-
tendants had approved a five-year agree-
ment that includes compensation and em-
ployment condition provisions, as well as
standardized processes, and established a
formal framework for discussions between
the association and company.
The agreement is the first of its kind ne-
gotiated between the airline and its elected
employee association.
"We negotiated the best possible agree-
ment for our rapidly growing membership
and will follow through to ensure the best
interest of our flight attendants are clearly
represented through the term of this agree-
ment," said Anthony Pascale, chair of the
Flight Attendant Association Board. "We are
pleased with the result of negotiations and
believe this agreement offers the best flexi-
bility and work environment of any
airline in Canada."
