Marie took part in an Ontario Labour Rela- tions Board (OLRB) vote on Aug. 13 to deter- mine whether they would organize under the the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) union. But the vote is now under review by the board after a number of ballots were segre- gated. Of 392 ballots, 61 remain in dispute. OLRB documents provided to Canadian Labour Reporter show 175 votes were cast in favour of the union while 129 ballots were cast against. A total of 29 ballots have been agreed upon and ruled out by the parties involved. Presentations by both the employer and union will help determine whether each of the segregated ballots is valid and added to the of- ficial count. Conversion leads to conflict WHEN Kemptville District Hos- pital converted its long-term care unit to accommodate convales- cent care patients, Lauri Presley's job was eliminated. Presley had worked at the Ontario-based facility more than a decade as an RPN (registered practical nurse) team leader when she was given her layoff notice. Following the conversion, her position was eliminated and the hospital created the new position of "registered nurse team leader" to oversee the convalescent care patients. Presley filed grievances though her union, the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 772. GOVERNMENT Corporation of the Township of Esquimalt Esquimalt, B.C. Marie recently voted to determine whether they would organize under PSAC. The Ontario Labour Relations Board is currently reviewing 61 segregated ballots.
