First agreement
for McGill
course lecturers,
instructors
MONTREAL — The mem-
bers of the McGill Course Lec-
turers and Instructors Union
(MCLIU) recently voted to
adopt their first collective
agreement.
The deal includes salary in-
creases over the three years of
the agreement as well as retro-
active pay from January 2015.
The Montreal-based univer-
sity's course lecturers were pre-
viously the lowest paid in the
province, the union said.
Also included in the agree-
ment was the recognition of
seniority in the allocation of
courses, paid sick leave and the
creation of a labour relations
committee.
Grievance, arbitration and
disciplinary procedures were
also put into place. Addition-
ally, the agreement included
parental leave rights equivalent
to those of full-time teachers.
"Our new work agreement,
whose terms are comparable to
those of other course lecturers'
collective agreements negotiated
through FNEEQ-CSN (Fédera-
tion Nationale des Enseignantes
et des Enseignants du Québec),
represents substantial gains for
our members," said Raad Jas-
sim, president of MCLIU, an af-
filiate of the FNEEQ-CSN.
Unifor to fi le
complaint against
Coventry, Ottawa
Airport Authority
OTTAWA — Unifor is filing
an unfair labour practice com-
plaint against Coventry Con-
nections and the Ottawa Inter-
national Airport Authority.
The union is alleging the par-
ties undermined its bargaining
rights and interfered with its
status as the exclusive bargain-
ing agent for airport cab driv-
ers.
The complaint comes after
Coventry Connections and
the Airport Authority recently
agreed to change the drivers'
dispatch fees from a monthly
rate to a per-fare rate.
"It was a money grab by these
two enterprises that will net
them millions of dollars," said
Unifor national representative
Harry Ghadban.
Drivers protested the change
by refusing to pay fees, which
led to Coventry effectively lock-
ing out the employees.
The complaint calls for com-
pensation to be paid to drivers
for losses suffered during the
lockout and for any individual
agreements signed with drivers
who crossed the picket line to
be cancelled.
"We are anxious to return to
the table to negotiate a deal that
is fair to all sides," Ghadban
said.
