More Suncor workers join Unifor FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — Workers at the Suncor East Tank Farm voted overwhelmingly to join Unifor. The workers will join 4,000 members as part of local 707A at the company's extraction facili- ties in Northern Alberta. "We look forward to getting to work at the bargaining table," said Joie Warnock, Unifor's western director. "Many workers in the oil and gas sector are still without the protections and safety of a col- lective agreement," said Jerry Dias, Unifor president. Nordia employees join USW LINDSAY, Ont. — Employees of the Nordia call centre in Lind- say, Ont., voted to join the Unit- ed Steelworkers (USW) union. A majority of employees — 71 per cent — voted in favour of joining the USW, rejecting an anti-union campaign waged by the company over several weeks, according to the union. More than 100 employees work at the call centre for the Quebec-based company. The Lindsay employees are the fourth group of Nordia work- ers who have agreed to become a part of USW, joining workers in Kitchener, Quebec City and Sherbrooke, Que. A wholly-owned subsidiary of Bell Canada, Nordia operates call centres that provide services to Bell customers. UAW will support Unifor in talks with GM: president DETROIT (Reuters) — United Auto Workers (UAW) president Dennis Williams said the U.S. union will support Unifor dur- ing contract talks with General Motors. Williams said he believes GM and Jerry Dias, president of Uni- for, will "come to a conclusion that's best for all parties." Dias and Unifor have threat- ened the strike of about 4,000 workers at GM plants in Ontario unless a new four-year contract is reached by Sept. 19. "The UAW is going to support the auto workers," said Williams . A strike would have ripple ef- fects at U.S. plants, particularly if Unifor workers walk off their jobs at a plant in St. Catharines, Ont. Williams would not comment on whether the UAW would re- fuse extra work to make up for lost output if Unifor's GM work- ers strike at two Ontario plants. "I don't want to comment on that because I don't know what it will bring us, but we'll do what- ever we can to help (Unifor) in any way we can," Williams said. If GM asks for extra work at the UAW's plants, "we'll have discussions with General Mo- tors and tell them how dissatis- fied we are." Dias recently said he expected the UAW "would respect any action" Unifor takes and not re- place production from GM's St Catharines factory.
