USW signs with Hampton Inn/ Homewood Suites SUDBURY, Ont. — United Steelworkers (USW) Local 2020 members and the Hampton Inn and Homewood Suites in Sud- bury, Ont., have negotiated a new collective agreement pro- viding wage increases and other improvements, according to the union. Gains in the three-year agree- ment — covering 70 employees at the two hotels — include wage increases of 40 cents an hour in each year of the deal. The wage increases amount to annual 3.2 per cent pay hikes for most em- ployees. Other contract improvements include an additional floater day off in each year of the agreement, a reduction in employee co-pay fees for benefits and a commit- ment for a joint labour-man- agement committee to review the benefits package to further reduce the cost of benefits, ac- cording to the union. The employees and hotels also negotiated new contract language to provide leave for workers affected by domestic violence. Cold Lake, Alta., seniors' home workers vote to strike COLD LAKE, Alta. — Employ- ees of Points West Living in Cold Lake voted to go on strike. The vote was held after the employer broke off negotia- tions with the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) earlier this month, according to the union. Points West Living is one of the most profitable seniors' care providers in Alberta, according to the union. The Ontario-based company expects to grow to a value of $500 million over the next five years. Once the Alberta Labour Rela- tions Board confirms the results of the vote, the workers will be in a legal position to strike after serving notice to their employer of the time and date that the strike will begin. Notice must be served at least 72 hours in advance. Nova Scotia teachers recommend acceptance HALIFAX — The president of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union says the union's executive is rec- ommending acceptance of a new tentative contract with the pro- vincial government. Liette Doucet says the recom- mendation comes after the de- tails were revealed to the execu- tive on Thursday. Doucet says details of the con- tract will be revealed to union members during meetings this week. She says a ratification vote for the province's 9,000 public school teachers will be held Oct. 4. Details of the new agreement have been kept under wraps since it was announced Sept. 7.
