2 Canadian HR Reporter, a Thomson Reuters business 2017 Unifor reaches CHCH deal in Hamilton HAMILTON, Ont. — Fifteen months after more than 100 workers at Hamilton TV station CHCH lost their jobs with no notice and no severance, Unifor reached a deal March 27 to com- pensate those workers. Under the mediated settle- ment, the station will pay out $1 million in severance and gen- eral damages for workers denied such payments after the Decem- ber 2015 job cuts, and recogniz- es Unifor as the sole bargaining agent for the remaining staff at CHCH, said Unifor. "Without a union, these work- ers still would have received nothing," said Liz Marzari, Unifor national representa- tive. "Without today's deal, they could be months or years from seeing any settlement." The agreement between the union and the employer was reached 15 months after Chan- nel 11 declared bankruptcy and the CHCH staff members lost their jobs with no notice and no severance. Local programming was slashed from 80 hours a week down to 17.5, according to the union. New deal for Air Inuit after 2 years of talks LAVAL, Que. — About 160 pilots and flight attendants employed by Air Inuit in La- val, Que., ratified a new collec- tive agreement on March 7 that guarantees peace with the air carrier until 2023. Teamsters Local Union 1999 has represented Air Inuit work- ers since 1996. Non-monetary and mon- etary clauses will be enhanced in the new contract, said the union. Negotiations — which began in 2015 — were not without snags. Management proposals were twice rejected by Team- sters members before being ratified. The assistance of con- ciliators and federal mediators was also required during talks, according to Teamsters. "I would like to salute the work of the negotiating com- mittee, as well as the patience shown by these workers, who really pulled together for two long years," said Michel Héroux, chair of Teamsters Local 1999. Strike begins at community living centre CAMPBELLFORD, Ont. — About 100 workers at Com- munity Living Campbellford/ Brighton (CLCB) in Campbell- ford, Ont., went on strike on March 22. Members of Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OP- SEU), Local 316 rejected the employer's final offer at the bar- gaining table, which was "a clear consensus that this deal wasn't addressing our main concerns," said Leslie Coles, vice-president of OPSEU Local 316. An issue that led members to reject the offer is the employer's demand that staff use their per- sonal vehicles, which raised sig- nificant concerns about health and safety. Another issue was the "sub-standard wage pack- age" the employer offered, ac- cording to the union.
