Ottawa
addictions
workers ratify
fi rst contract
OTTAWA — About 40 On-
tario Public Service Employees
Union (OPSEU) members who
provide addictions counselling
and services at Rideauwood Ad-
diction and Family Services in
Ottawa have their first contract
after voting on March 9 to ratify
the tentative agreement reached
earlier.
"We joined together in a
union to make sure we have the
working conditions we need to
offer the best possible services,
and that's just what we've done,"
said Wendy Brown, an addic-
tions counsellor and the chair of
OPSEU Local 454's Rideauwood
bargaining committee.
The two-year agreement is
retroactive to Jan. 1, 2018, and
expires March 31, 2020.
In addition to wage increases,
the workers will receive a sign-
ing bonus of up to $1,000, and a
collective agreement that gives
them increased transparency,
job security and a new, formal
grievance process, said the
union.
The addictions workers —
who voted to join OPSEU —
provide services to nearly 2,500
children, teens, adults, and fami-
lies across the Ottawa region.
Strike mandate
for workers at
Redpath Sugar
BELLEVILLE, Ont. — Em-
ployees at Redpath Sugar in Bel-
leville, Ont., turned down a final
offer on March 11 from the em-
ployer and voted 90 per cent in
favour of taking strike action.
The United Food and Com-
mercial Workers (UFCW), Lo-
cal 175 negotiating committee
met with the employer on eight
occasions and on the eighth
day, the parties met in concilia-
tion. At the end of that day, the
employer tabled a final offer,
which the workers voted down
at the March 11 meeting, said
the union.
"The members at Redpath
gave their committee a strong
message with the strike vote,"
said Shawn Haggerty, UFCW
175 president.
Members want to end the
two-tier wage grid and benefit
contribution level gaps. Wages
for employees hired before Nov.
28, 2010, are $3.85 per hour
more than those hired after that
date, said the union.
The union requested a "no-
board" report from the Ontario
Labour Relations Board (OLRB)
on March 12.
Montreal
Swissport
workers
join IAM
MONTREAL — Canada's larg-
est airport union, International
Association of Machinists and
Aerospace Workers (IAM),
gained 250 new members on
March 7 from Swissport Canada
at Pierre Elliot Trudeau Interna-
tional Airport in Montreal.
"The IAM welcomes all of
these new members to their
union," said Stan Pickthall, IAM
Canadian general vicepresident.
"These workers sought out the
IAM to be their union of choice.
Our reputation for providing
good service and first-class rep-
resentation to our members
paved the way for us to be certi-
fied for this group."
The new members include
ground handlers, mechanics,
storekeepers, and communica-
tions coordinator and operation
officers, said the union.
