City of
Cornwall,
Ont., rejects
off er: CUPE
CORNWALL, Ont. — Repre-
sentatives of the Canadian Union
of Public Employees (CUPE)
met on May 24 and 25 with the
City of Cornwall in Ontario but a
new contract offer was rejected,
said the union.
CUPE has been advised that
the employer is not planning to
make a counter-offer, according
to CUPE .
The city advised CUPE that
it preferred to request a super-
vised vote from the Ministry of
Labour, said the union.
The bargaining committees
will be recommending rejection
of the employer's final offer, ac-
cording to CUPE.
"We hope the city is able to
exhibit some of the same resolve
to find a negotiated settlement,"
said Alison Denis, CUPE nation-
al representative. "We are disap-
pointed, but we remain available
to bargain if the city changes its
mind."
The workers have been with-
out a contract since 2015 (in the
case of the library) and 2016 (in
the case of all others), said the
union.
The employees work for the
city in outside jobs, at the library
and as paramedics.
Victoria
municipal
workers vote
yes to strike
VICTORIA — Canadian Union
of Public Employees (CUPE),
Local 1978 members, who work
for the B.C. Capital Regional
District (CRD) in Victoria, voted
93 per cent in favour of strike ac-
tion in a vote held on May 31.
after several months of nego-
tiations the union and the CRD
have still not been able to reach
a deal said Rick Illi, CUPE, Local
1978 president.
"These workers are not en-
titled to the majority of benefits
in the collective agreement so
instead they earn an hourly pre-
mium," said Illi.
"One of our main priorities
in this round of negotiations is
a modest increase to this hourly
premium for our most vulner-
able members who often don't
have job security, reliable hours
or consistent schedules. To date
the Greater Victoria Labour
Relations Board and CRD have
not been willing to seriously
consider this proposal and, as a
result we have reached an im-
passe in negotiations," said Illi.
CUPE plans to file for media-
tion to attempt to resolve nego-
tiations without strike action
through a mediator appointed
by the B.C. Labour Relations
Board (LRB), said the union.
CP24 on-air
employees
in Toronto
join Unifor
TORONTO — On-air report-
ers, anchors and hosts at all-
news television station CP24 in
Toronto joined their unionized
co-workers at the station on May
28 to become members of Uni-
for.
"In these challenging times
for the media sector, journalists
and media workers are seeing
the value in being part of a union
that fights for the future of the
industry," said Howard Law, Uni-
for media director.
The 25 workers will be mem-
bers of Local 723-M after their
bargaining unit was certified last
week by the Canada Industrial
Relations Board, said Unifor.
