2 Canadian HR Reporter, a Thomson Reuters business 2018 Strike averted at Toronto Marriott TORONTO — A tentative agreement was reached on Sept. 8 between Unifor, Local 7575 and the Toronto Marriott Bloor Yorkville, averting a strike. "We are pleased that the bar- gaining committee has reached an agreement they will recom- mend to members which, if ratified, will avoid any inconve- nience to hotel guests and the public during the Toronto In- ternational Film Festival," said Jerry Dias, Unifor's national president. Details of the tentative agree- ment will not be released un- til they are presented to union members at a ratification meet- ing, said the union. Unifor represents 168 work- ers in all areas of the hotel in- cluding guest services, the lounge, banquets, kitchen, laundry, room attendants and maintenance, according to the union. Owen Sound, Ont., clinic workers ratify agreement OWEN SOUND, Ont. — On- tario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) members at the Owen Sound Family Health Organization in Owen Sound, Ont., ratified a collective agree- ment on Sept. 5. "These workers, who are almost all women, have won an astounding victory against overwhelming odds," said War- ren (Smokey) Thomas, OPSEU president. The workers went on strike on May 22. The OPSEU Local 276 mem- bers went on strike because the doctors who own the clinic were offering the employees low wage increases after four years of frozen wages, accord- ing to OPSEU. But in the new four-year agreement, the doctors ad- dressed many of those concerns, providing substantial wage in- creases, no pension claw-backs, and significantly improved job security, said OPSEU. Halifax crossing guards ratify new contract HALIFAX — Crossing guards voted 99 per cent in favour of a new collective agreement on Sept. 4 with their employer, the Halifax Regional Municipality. The crossing guards are mem- bers of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Lo- cal 4814. The agreement was reached through conciliation on Aug. 21, 2018, said the union. Local 4814 members will re- ceive a 9.8 per cent wage increase over the term of the three-year agreement. Other improve- ments include job security and extended use of vacation days, said CUPE. Auction workers join UFCW TORONTO — Warehouse workers at AuctionMaxx, an on- line auction house based in To- ronto, voted to join the United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW), Local 1006A on Sept. 1. AuctionMaxx employees ini- tially reached out to the union for greater job security, schedule protection and improved wages, said UFCW. The workers work in the on- line company's logistics centre, which stores a wide variety of AuctionMaxx items.
