employees
ratify contract
SASKATOON — Members of
Unifor, Local 650 hope to see
economic and safety gains after
ratifying a four-year collective
agreement with the Radisson Ho-
tel Saskatoon on Nov. 7.
"New limits on housekeep-
ing workloads and improved
scheduling language are wel-
come news for our hardworking
members," said Kelly Ries, Uni-
for, Local 650 president.
"Should the minimum wage
raise during the life of the col-
lective agreement, the employ-
er agreed to discuss all wage
classifications," said Ries.
The new agreement includes
wage increases of 7.5 per cent
and clearer guidelines for treat-
ment of banquet-staff gratu-
ities.
The union was also success-
ful at negotiating stronger pro-
tections against harassment
and benefits gains including
paid days off, crisis leave and
improved optical coverage, said
Unifor.
Radisson workers also gained
access to a workplace women's
advocate.
Unifor Local 650 represents
123 workers at the Radisson
in housekeeping, banquets,
kitchen and in-room dining;
front desk, the Aroma Resto Bar,
maintenance and the fitness fa-
cilities.
Ontario
shelter
workers sign
fi rst deal
CAMBRIDGE, Ont. — Mem-
bers of International Association
of Machinists and Aerospace
Workers (IAM), Local 103 ratified
their first collective agreement on
Nov. 15 with Cambridge Shelter
in Cambridge, Ont.
"They fought us hard getting
unionized earlier this year and
again during negotiations this
was a long and tough battle," said
Scott Jackson, IAM grand lodge
organizer.
The one-year agreement pro-
vides the membership with job
security and a grievance proce-
dure, said IAM.
Other agreement highlights
include the introduction of an
IAM pension plan for, improved
vacation benefits, bereavement
leave and a modest wage in-
crease for most employees, said
the union.
Toyota workers
join IAM in
Ontario
SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. —
The International Association of
Machinists and Aerospace Work-
ers (IAM) organized another auto
dealership in Sault Ste. Marie,
Ont.
In a Ministry of Labour autho-
rized vote, workers at NorthSide
Toyota voted to join the IAM on
Nov. 13. IAM now represents
workers at six auto dealerships
in Sault Ste. Marie.
"We're growing our footprint
in Sault Ste. Marie and we want
to add more dealerships. These
workers want fairness in the
workplace, better wages, better
benefits and a pension and they
came to us to obtain those goals,"
said Lou Pagrach, IAM grand
lodge representative.
The newest members of IAM,
Local 2332 include service tech-
nicians, apprentices and parts
personnel. IAM also represents
workers at Prouse Motors, Su-
perior Dodge, Maitland Lewis,
Highland Ford and Superior
Nissan, said the union.
IAM represents more than
1,550 workers in automotive
dealerships in British Columbia,
Alberta, Ontario, New Bruns-
wick and Newfoundland and
Labrador.
