MARCH 2019 2 Act now to future-proof your resume When senior admin Sue Munro (EA rebounds after job loss, page 1) was informed by her employer that she was being downsized out of her job, she was shocked and dismayed, as most anyone would be in that situation. But she knew she had to begin right away to find new employment. So that same day she uploaded her resume to Indeed.com, a major online job search site. Munro had an immediate need for an up-to-date resume. You may not, but wouldn't this be a good time for you to have a penetrating look at your own resume regardless of whether you're thinking of jumping into the job market? Your resume and your LinkedIn profile (which should be pretty much synchronized) contain the substance of your experience, skills and accom - plishments. Do they reflect everything you need to move up to your dream job – or support your quest for a hefty pay increase with your present employer? It's important to "future-proof" your resume, advises Andrew Fennell, an experienced recruiter and founder of StandOut CV, a resume advice centre. It requires "more than just tweaking a piece of paper," he says, and he suggests three strategies to strengthen it: Take on extra responsibili - ties Have an in-depth look at how you might lighten your executive's workload. Take on some duties that are more senior in nature. "Show recruiters that you're ready for career progression … step outside of your comfort zone … and try to acquire some skills outside of the areas you already excel in," Fennell suggests. Stay ahead of the tech curve The tech landscape is constantly chang- ing. Is there a better way to manage emails, arrange meetings or travel, handle social media responsibilities? What about managing contacts and sharing files? If you seek to discover the latest technology and expand your skills accordingly, "you'll become a much more attractive candidate to future employers," says Fennell. Drive some tangible results Are there projects to which you can contribute? Are there processes in your group that you can help stream - line? Pulling together facts and figures that speak to your activities will give recruiters and hiring managers "an accurate reflection of benefits you could potentially bring to their team," Fennell points out. At the very least, a critical poke into your resume could awaken thoughts of your potential that may have slipped your notice. Business is constantly changing. Are you?
