2 Canadian HR Reporter, a HAB Press business 2019 Ottawa security guards join UFCW union OTTAWA — Security guards working at a number of fed- eral government buildings in Ottawa are the newest mem- bers of the United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) Canada, Local 333 after voting to join the union on June 18. The security guards work for the Ottawa branch of Commissionaires Canada, a non-profit security firm founded in 1925, said the union. "Our union will be working hard to negotiate a contract that provides Commissionaires workers with the dignity, fair pay and benefits they deserve, and we look forward to repre- senting them at the bargaining table and in the workplace," said Richard McNaughton, president of UFCW Canada, Local 333. In addition to the success- ful organizing drive in Ottawa, UFCW, Local 333 recently welcomed Commissionaires employees in Hamilton and has filed two other applications to represent Commissionaires security guards elsewhere in the national capital region. "In the Ontario security busi- ness, unionized companies pro- vide excellent benefits, paid sick days, and living wages," said Jeff Ketelaars, Secretary-Treasurer of UFCW Local 333. UFCW Canada Local 333 rep- resents thousands of workers in the security industry. Airbus workers ratify first agreement MONTREAL — Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Local Lodge 712 ratified their first collective agreement with Airbus in Mon- treal on June 17. "Airbus now has labour peace for the next five years and now has the tools to be in a better position to sell the A220," said David Chartrand, IAM Quebec coordinator. The membership ratified the new agreement by a margin of 76 per cent, said the union. "One of the key components of this agreement was the guar- antee of 150 to 300 jobs on pre- final assembly-line work," said Eric Rancourt, IAM District Lodge 11 business representa- tive. The five-year agreement pro- vides wage increases of two per cent in each of the first, second and third year respectively and 2.5 per cent in year four and year five, said the union. Other agreement highlights include job-security language enhancement, two shift-pre- mium increases, two-year in- crease on recall rights from three to five years, LTD benefits paid bi-monthly instead of monthly and automatic conversion from complimentary workforce to Airbus within 30 days ratifica- tion of 45 members, said IAM. The 1,200 employees manu- facture the Airbus A220-100 A220-300 narrow-body airliners formerly known as the Bom- bardier C-Series. The CSALP (C-Series Aircraft Limited Part- nership) is a partnership be- tween Airbus, Bombardier and the Quebec government. Employees at Reh-Fit secure higher wages in deal WINNIPEG — United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) Canada, Local 832 members working at the Reh-Fit Centre in Winnipeg voted unan- imously on June 19 in favour of a new union contract that pro- vides wage gains and increased RRSP contributions. During the life of the two-year deal, the health-care workers will see their wages rise by 3.75 per cent. Other monetary in- creases include a hike in employ- er-paid RRSP contributions and employees can now carry over their overtime, said the union. UFCW, Local 832 represents more than 50 employees at the centre, who work as fitness pro- fessionals, physiotherapist con- sultations, nurses and cafeteria and food services. UFCW Canada Local 832 is Manitoba's largest private sector union.
