The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), Local 1857 or- ganized auto dealership sales people at Open Road Lexus of Richmond, B.C., on June 27. "This is a first for B.C and perhaps in all of Canada that I'm aware of," said Al Cyr, IAM District Lodge 250 business rep- resentative/organizer. "We have traditionally organized mechan- ics, paint shop, auto body, detail- ers and service writers in the past but never sales personnel. But this group is quite unified and fed up with the manner in which they are being treated and we're more than willing to give them a voice and representation." The IAM represents more than 1,900 automotive members in Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Newfound- land and Labrador. Nurses ratify agreement with Chatham- Kent VON CHATHAM, Ont. — Regis- tered practical nurses with the Chatham-Kent Victorian Or- der of Nurses (VON) in Cha- tham, Ont., voted 89 per cent in favour of a new four-year collec- tive agreement following three years of negotiations with their employer. The nurses, who are members of CLAC. Local 303, provide home care throughout the re- gion. Their previous contract had expired three years ago and the new contract provides them with lump-sum payments to compensate for the last three years, with a modest wage in- crease for the fourth year, said the union. This ratification brings the expired contract back up to date, with only months to spare be- fore the parties head back to the bargaining table in early 2020, said CLAC. "We knew, based on the pat- tern of settlements across On- tario, that we got as much as we could for our members during this protracted round of bar- gaining," said Ryan Griffioen, CLAC representative. TST Overland workers ratify agreement, averting strike TORONTO — About 400 truck drivers and dock work- ers employed by TST Overland in Ontario voted 83 per cent on June 24 to ratify a new four-year deal. This comes after the employ- ees, who are represented by Teamsters, Locals 91, 938 and 879, had voted by over 99 per cent in favour of strike action last month. About 30 mechan- ics at the company also voted unanimously to ratify their own separate four-year agreement on June 23, said the union. "Workers in the trucking in- dustry have demanding, thank- less jobs. They deserve fair pay and decent treatment, things these new contracts guarantee," said François Laporte, president of Teamsters Canada. The truck drivers, dock work- ers and mechanics will receive a 9.5 per cent raise over the course of both agreements, said Teamsters. They will also see improve- ments to their pension fund and benefits plan, said the union. Dock workers, mechanics and city drivers at TST Overland are paid an hourly wage. Highway truck drivers are paid a combin- ation of hourly wages and a mile- age rate. In their case, the hourly wage kicks in once a route takes longer than normally expected, said Teamsters. The union made no conces- sions throughout the course of the negotiations, according to the union. The company had sought to deny drivers the ability to refuse to work over 45 hours per week. Forced overtime would have greatly diminished drivers' qual- ity of life, and would have made it more difficult to manage their fatigue, said the union. The previous collective agreements had expired on March 23. Negotiations had been ongoing for four months, said Teamsters.
