2 Canadian HR Reporter, a HAB Press business 2019 Mapleridge Contracting employees sign agreement PICKERING, Ont. — Employ- ees of Mapleridge Mechanical Contracting, based in Pickering, Ont., ratified a new three-year collective agreement provid- ing them with improvements to wages and benefits. "This was a very productive round of negotiations, and the employees were pleased with the results," says J. D. Alkema, regional director of CLAC, the union that represents the work- ers. "The new contract also provides a path forward for the employer to successfully bid on and obtain new work." The agreement includes total package increases of about 12 per cent over the term. Premi- ums were negotiated for both forepersons and lead-hands. The contract also includes im- provements to travel and per- sonal protective equipment pro- visions, says the union. Town of Placentia, N.L. strike over PLACENTIA, N.L. — Mem- bers of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1761, municipal workers with the Town of Placentia, N.L. final- ized a new collective agreement with their employer on Aug. 28. The union successfully pushed back the zero-wage increase of- fered by the town. The new con- tract includes wage increases and other improvements, says the union. "We are an integral part of the community here, and we are pleased we were able to reach a deal and put an end to this dif- ficult round of bargaining," says Gerry Quilty, president of CUPE 1761. The agreement concludes the longest round of bargain- ing in the local's history. After 14 months of negotiations the workers went on strike July 16, 2019. They returned to work on Aug. 29, says CUPE. The new contract is in effect from April 1, 2018 and it will expire in four years. CUPE 1761 represents 15 municipal workers. More jobs at Adient in Tillsonburg, Ont. TILLSONBURG, Ont. — Em- ployees at Adient will get a new product line for the Ford F-150 on Aug. 28 that is projected to create between 70 to 100 jobs at the automotive parts manufac- turer in Tillsonburg, Ont. In April, Unifor bargained a new collective agreement for members of Local 1859 at Adient. The addition of the F-150 product line is a result of the commitments Unifor won in the renegotiated collective agree- ment, says the union. "This is a big win for our in- dependent parts supplier mem- bers, the town of Tillsonburg, and the entire region," says Jerry Dias, Unifor national president. The addition of the Ford F-150 product line may also create new apprenticeship opportunities as well, according to Unifor. "It's a win for our high senior- ity members who have been on layoff for as much as one or two years and for precariously em- ployed young people who can now find a good union job at home in Tillsonburg," says Lor- raine Sinclair, president of Uni- for Local 1859. Pearson Airport workers ratify deal TORONTO — The Interna- tional Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) membership at Sage Parts at Toronto's Pearson Airport rati- fied its second collective agree- ment by a 100 per cent margin on Aug. 22. "We ultimately won the fight for $18 by ensuring that all cur- rent IAM members at Sage Parts YYZ were making $18 per hour or higher," says Michael Corrado, general chair with IAM District 140. All pay rates went up signifi- cantly and entry rates jumped by close to $2 per hour in all depart- ments, says the union.
