NETWORK LIKE A PRO STORY BY TIM CORK Whether job hunting or building a career, remember 'life is an echo – what you send out comes back' NETWORKING, OR AS I LIKE TO CALL IT "NETGIVING," GIVES YOU THE CONFIDENCE TO INTERACT WITH OTHERS. ONE OF MY FAVOURITE SAYINGS, A GREAT CHINESE PROVERB IS: "LIFE IS AN ECHO — WHAT YOU SEND OUT COMES BACK." Networking is simply connecting with others. It can be by phone, text, email, face-toface, social media or in other ways. It's not complicated — too often we get caught up and think it's complicated and we can get overwhelmed. Every time you connect with another person, that's networking. The real art of perfecting this skill lies in capturing what's important to other people and making a difference for them. That's netgiving. When you approach a situation or others with the attitude of "What can I do for you," you open up the vault of possibilities. When people realize you have their best interests at heart, they will open up. On the other side, if you come across as a taker or "What's in it for me" then people won't line up or open up to help you, at least not in the long term. The attitude of giving, not getting, will enrich your relationships and interaction with others. Networking will pay huge rewards and dividends when you keep these strategies, concepts and actions in mind. ASK GOOD QUESTIONS Great questions lead to great answers, and also get others to talk about themselves and what's important to them. If you want to get certain things, then your questions have the answers built in. An example of this in an interview situation would be to ask the person interviewing you, "Why did you come to work for this company?" or "What do you love about canadian hr profession hrreporter.com HRP.indd 23 23 12-03-26 11:28 AM
