Sunwing pilots ratify collective agreement TORONTO — Pilots at Sun- wing Airlines ratified a new col- lective agreement. The 380 flight crew members affected by the deal are repre- sented by Unifor Local 7378. Union members are locat- ing at bases in Halifax, Quebec City, Montreal, Toronto, Cal- gary, Edmonton and Vancouver as well as in various locations in Europe. According to Joel Fournier, the union's director of transpor- tation, the agreement exceeds parity with other pilot groups in the industry. "We are pleased with hav- ing bargained a settlement that moves our members forward and recognizes the important role they play in the success of the business," he said. GoodLife employees attempt to organize TORONTO — The Workers' United Canada Council submit- ted an application to GoodLife Fitness in an effort to represent its employees in the Toronto area. If successful, the union would represent more than 1,500 per- sonal trainers and fitness instruc- tors employed by the organiza- tion. According to the union — an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) — a group of employees campaigned for representation because of concerns over low wages, signifi- cant training costs, non-compete clauses and a lack of injury insur- ance. The workers will be asked to vote on union representation. "It's important to note that we are not anti-union at all, we are pro-employee," said Jane Riddell, chief operating officer at Good- Life. "We respect our employees' right to make their own decisions about union representation. We trust their judgment and whatever hap- pens, we will respect the out- come. That being said, we abso- lutely believe our employees do not need a union." Hospital professionals reach Ontario-wide agreement TORONTO — More than 12,000 hospital professional across Ontario reached a new collective agreement with the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA). The three-year agreement was signed following a marathon bargaining session and includes improvements to wages, vaca- tion entitlements and shift pre- miums. The tentative deal would af- fect employees at 53 hospitals throughout the province. Employees affected by the contract include lab technolo- gists, radiation technologists, respiratory therapists, social workers, pharmacy technicians and workers in more than 250 other occupations. According to the Ontario Pub- lic Service Employees' Union (OPSEU), this agreement is the first central contract in a decade to be settled at the bargaining table. Previous central contracts were reached through arbitration. Ratification votes on the deal will be held on a local basis throughout June.
