Telus, union agree to deal VANCOUVER — Telus and its union have reached a tentative agreement on a new five-year deal. The next step for the nearly 11,000 members of the Telecom- munications Workers Union (TWU) are ratification votes. "Following several months of very challenging negotiations, a tentative agreement has been reached on a proposed new con- tract between our members and Telus," said Lee Riggs, TWU na- tional president. "Our members will have the opportunity to fully examine and consider all details of the tentative agreement before par- ticipating in ratification votes in coming weeks." Ratification meetings will be- gin mid-October and are expect- ed to conclude in November. "The negotiations teams have worked together to reach a fair agreement that effectively bal- ances the needs of our team members, customers and share- holders," said Darren Entwistle, president and CEO of Telus. Details of the tentative deal will not be publicly released until affected employees have the op- portunity to vote. Students' union workers vote for CUPE REGINA — Employees of the University of Regina Students' Union (URSU) have reaffirmed their commitment to the Cana- dian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) in a unanimous vote at the Saskatchewan labour rela- tions board. Recently, the URSU board of directors withdrew its voluntary recognition of the local in the midst of bargaining, forcing the issue to a vote at the board, ac- cording to the union. "URSU's response to our dem- ocratic vote has been to allude that CUPE will need to start over and negotiate a first collective agreement," said Neil Petrich, president of the local. CUPE has filed an unfair la- bour practice application with the labour relations board chal- lenging this assertion, as well as URSU's exclusion of supervi- sors. At the board hearing, Carl Flis, general manager of URSU, refused to agree to supervisors being included in the same bar- gaining unit with other employ- ees, according to the union. As a result, the Labour Re- lations Board has created two bargaining units represented by CUPE: one for supervisors and one for other employees, said the union. The application will be heard Dec. 19 to 21, 2016. Wedgewood workers sign with OPSEU BROCKVILLE, ONT. — Workers at Chartwell Wedge- wood Retirement Community voted to become members of the Ontario Public Service Employ- ees Union (OPSEU). Fifty-five staff members are looking for better wages and a more consistent application of policy, according to the union. Wedgewood staff had been seeking union representa- tion even before the home was bought last May by Chartwell.
