workers get
strike mandate
TORONTO — Members of the
Ontario Public Service Employ-
ees Union (OPSEU) working at
Fred Victor Centre in Toronto-
have voted 88 per cent in favour
of strike action if talks fail.
"The members came together
and decided we have to stand
firm if we're going to negotiate
a fair contract," said Marg Rob-
inson, OPSEU Local 509 vice-
president.
Key issues on the table include
workplace violence, stress leave,
alternate work arrangements,
wages and benefits for relief and
casual staff.
Fred Victor Centre is a non-
profit agency that provides pro-
grams and support for people
experiencing homelessness.
Hatchery
workers sign
EDMONTON — UFCW Can-
ada Local 1118 members work-
ing at the Lilydale hatchery in
Edmonton, Alta., ratified a new
agreement.
"We came out of this process
with a better collective agree-
ment for the 1118 members, and
a strong foundation to build on
for future negotiations," said Mi-
chael Hughes, UFCW Canada
local 1118 director.
The workers service Sofina
Foods' partners, which is the
parent company of Lilydale.
Highlights of the new four-
year agreement include: across-
the-board wage increases (retro-
active to Februay 2016) of $0.40
in each year of the deal, a new
shift premium for afternoon and
night shift workers, new safety
footwear allowance, according
to the union.
The deal also includes: im-
provements to working condi-
tions for truck drivers, improve-
ments to dental and vision care
benefits, improvements to the
RRSP program, strengthened
seniority provisions governing
work assignments and improved
language on the use of sick leave
and doctor's notes, said the
union.
Niagara-on-
the-Lake plant
strike ends
NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE,
Ont. — A two-week strike at
Industrial Management Group
in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., is
over after Unifor Local 199 rati-
fied a new deal.
"It was the union response
to support our demands and
defend the picket line from the
employer's attempts to gain ac-
cess that made a difference," said
Doug Orr, national representa-
tive.
Workers at Industrial Man-
agement Group, previously
Seneca Manufacturing, voted
overwhelmingly in favor of the
agreement reached yesterday,
according to the union.
The deal includes payment of
lost wages withheld by the em-
ployer and full settlement for the
arbitration and Labour Relations
Board rulings, said the union.
The agreement allows for
the terms of the current agree-
ment to be enforced month-to-
month, as well as a continued
relationship with the employer's
current customers into 2017 as
it looks for new investment, ac-
cording to the union.
