2 Canadian HR Reporter, a Thomson Reuters business 2017 North Bay city workers sign contract NORTH BAY, Ont. — A tenta- tive agreement was reached last week after multiple bargain- ing days, and has already been ratified by the North Bay City Council. "We were really pleased to be able to recommend this deal to our members," said Brian Phil- lips, president of Local 122. "It is fair to our members, who are on the front lines delivering high- quality public services every day." The three-year deal includes annual wage increases of 1.5 per cent, said the union. The deal also includes non- monetary improvements to working conditions, such as posting of overtime in all de- partments, more notice for shift changes, new language on a return-to-work protocol and an improvement to bereavement leave provisions, according to the union. Local 122 represents roughly 300 members, in departments as diverse as roads, parks, tran- sit, the waste transfer station, water and wastewater, and city hall administration. This deal does not include North Bay library workers, who are also represented by CUPE 122, said the union. Peel Region, Ont., CAS strike ends after 13 weeks MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — Workers from the Children's Aid Society of Ontario's Region of Peel (Peel CAS) have ended a 13-week strike. "Now the important thing is getting back to work and letting the arbitration process contin- ue while our members focus on what is important, the children and families of Peel who rely on our service," said Sonia Yung, president of local 4914 of the Canadian Union of Public Em- ployees (CUPE). The strike ended after Peel CAS agreed to CUPE's request to reach an agreement on their outstanding issues through binding arbitration, according to the union. Vancouver Shoppers Drug Mart workers ratify new deal VANCOUVER — United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW) Canada Local 1518 members working at the Shoppers Drug Mart location on Davie Street in Vancouver have ratified a new collective agreement. The new deal will include im- provements to wages, benefits, said the union. The new contract drastically reduces the amount of hours employees have to work before they are able to qualify for den- tal benefits, according to the union. New language has also been added to the agreement to im- prove workplace safety, particu- larly for overnight employees, said UFCW. Members will also receive a signing bonus and off-scale wage increases of $0.25 to $0.30 per hour — dependent on the number of hours worked — in the second and third years of the agreement, said the union.
