2 Canadian HR Reporter, a Thomson Reuters business 2017 USW reaches agreement with 2 Ontario employers PEMBROKE, Ont. — New settlements for workers at two Renfrew County employers will mean a more secure future in 2017, said the United Steelwork- ers union (USW). Employees at Pemco, maker of steel components, in Pem- broke, Ont., have negotiated an agreement that includes a new, union-trusteed multi-employer pension plan, improved wages, vacation and benefits until 2019, according to the union. At Samuel, Son and Co., a steel service facility, workers have also negotiated a three-year agree- ment, which includes an im- proved registered pension plan, a new, short-term-disability plan, wage increases and bene- fits, said the union. "With all the negative news about worker displacement in today's economy, it remains the union's top priority to negotiate good contracts with employers who respect their workers and their rights," said Marty Warren, USW Ontario director. " Steelworkers' union members at Pemco and Samuel, Son. and Co., are members of USW local 6946, an amalgamated union lo- cal. Addiction Services joins OPSEU, NUPGE AURORA, Ont. — All 50 front- line staff with Addiction Services for York Region (ASYR) are now members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union and the National Union of Public and General Employees (OPSEU/ NUPGE). The workers said yes to join- ing the 130,000-strong union in a vote held on Dec. 12, said the union. OPSEU/NUPGE rep- resents more than 8,000 mental health workers "We had a high turnout, and the vote was decisively in favour of joining the union," said Ed Arvelin, chair of OPSEU's men- tal health division. Addiction Services for York Region is a non-profit rehabili- tation agency that specializes in the treatment of substance, drug, and alcohol abuse. It pro- vides addiction assessment and out-patient treatment services for individuals aged 12 and older. The agency works out of 9 locations throughout York Re- gion in Ontario, including Au- rora, Richmond Hill, Markham, Maple, and Keswick. Unifor workers locked out in Gander, N.L. Gander, N.L. — Aerospace com- pany D-J Composites locked out employees recently — members of Unifor local 597 — according to the union, which said the com- pany wants wage freezes for up to five years for some employees and three years of wage freezes for others, with an increase of 15 cents an hour in 2018, and 20 cents in 2019. After 22 months trying to bargain a new collective agree- ment the employees authorized a strike with a 100 per cent vote mandate, said Unifor. "Our members are rightfully upset at the lack of progress at the bargaining table and with this lock-out just days before the holidays," said Carolyn Wrice, president of Unifor local 597.
